Key Responsibilities

  • To work within a multi-disciplinary team to provide and assist with the development of the Optometric service for patients at the Royal Free.
  • To run and manage the specialist contact lens service at the Royal Free.
  • To work closely with Ophthalmologists and the Head of Service to deliver streamlined pathways within the corneal service to the highest standards of quality and care.
  • To participate in the delivery of certain more complex specialist optometric services that meet the changing needs of the Directorate and other outside agencies.
  • To undertake administrative duties as required by the role undertaken.
  • To participate in clinical audit and research where appropriate.
  • To provide teaching and training at undergraduate and postgraduate levels for various disciplines within ophthalmology.

Person Specification

  • Demonstrable ability to meet the Trust Values.
  • To possess an Orthoptic degree or diploma, and relevant clinical management leadership qualification.
  • To have at least 5 years' experience in all aspects of clinical Orthoptics involving specialist services.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and clinical skills relevant to Orthoptics and management of services.
  • Demonstrate management/leadership experience.
  • To have demonstrated specialist training through Continuing Professional Development.
  • To utilise time effectively and assist with the implementation of wider trust objectives.
  • To be able to show good working relationships at all levels and to work as part of a multidisciplinary team or independently.
  • To be able to work under pressure in a busy environment.
  • To be able to consistently communicate effectively with patients and staff at all levels in a professional and respectful manner.
  • The ability to handle difficult situations calmly and effectively to deal with patients, tactfully, efficiently and with empathy.
  • To have good presentation skills for formal and informal teaching of undergraduate and postgraduates, and audit.

Desirable Qualifications and Attributes

  • Knowledge of Department of Health strategic plans for clinical services for Allied Health Professionals.
  • To have knowledge of research methodology and willingness to contribute to research within the department.
