Position Overview

We are seeking compassionate and motivated individuals to become part of our breast imaging team at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust as part of the Mammography Associate apprenticeship program.

In this position, you will conduct mammographic assessments under the guidance of a registered practitioner, contributing to both screening and symptomatic breast services. You will also assist radiologists, clinicians, and radiographers during diagnostic breast evaluations. This role offers the opportunity to provide exceptional clinical care, foster collaborative relationships within a multidisciplinary team, and enhance patient experiences. It is particularly suitable for individuals currently engaged in a clinical capacity.

The selected candidates will receive compensation in accordance with Annex 21 of the Agenda for Change Terms and Conditions throughout their training.

Due to the nature of the work, this position has a gender-specific requirement, and as such, it is exempt under section 9; part 1 of the Equality Act 2010, allowing only female applicants to apply.

Key Responsibilities

After initial classroom instruction, you will progress through your apprenticeship training by mastering mammography imaging techniques as a valued member of the breast imaging team. During your apprenticeship, you will learn:

  • Safe operation of specialized mammography equipment
  • Production of high-quality mammography images
  • Patient dignity and care
  • Effective communication with diverse individuals
  • Promotion and maintenance of professional standards

You will collaborate with our experienced team of advanced practitioners, radiographers, and assistants, participating in both screening and symptomatic mammography. Continuous support will be provided by our clinical training team, and you will earn a salary while you learn.

To qualify for the apprenticeship program, candidates must:

  • Possess level 2 English and Maths or equivalent qualifications
  • Be legally authorized to work in the UK
  • Have resided in the UK for the past three years

Apprenticeship Training Responsibilities

As an apprentice, you are expected to:

  • Demonstrate enthusiasm and punctuality by attending all relevant lessons and courses
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare for assessments as scheduled
  • Adhere to the standards set by the training provider and the Trust
  • Perform your duties to the best of your ability in accordance with Trust policies
  • Ensure all submitted work is your own
  • Work towards targets set by your tutor/assessor
  • Maintain regular communication with your assessor and provide timely evidence of knowledge
  • Actively participate in progress reviews and communicate with your workplace mentor
  • Fully commit to achieving all components of the apprenticeship framework

Utilizing digital mammography equipment and under the supervision of a registered radiographer, you will learn to perform standard 2-D mammograms, which includes:

  • Verifying and recording client personal details and relevant information
  • Recognizing and addressing any withdrawal of consent during the procedure
  • Positioning clients appropriately for examinations
  • Administering radiation to produce diagnostic images
  • Ensuring proper recording and storage of images and examination details
  • Employing excellent communication skills throughout the process

Mammography Services

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting mammograms under the supervision of a registered radiographer for both symptomatic and asymptomatic clients at various locations
  • Ensuring compliance with procedures and addressing any issues with consent
  • Positioning clients for examinations and administering radiation to generate images
  • Maintaining accurate records of images and examination details
  • Utilizing digital mammography equipment effectively
  • Consistently performing mammography examinations in accordance with NHSBSP Quality Assurance Guidelines
  • Adhering to clinical protocols and local practice guidelines
  • Participating in peer review activities to uphold high standards in mammography
  • Managing your workload to ensure efficient service delivery
  • Recognizing when to seek assistance and working within your scope of practice
  • Actively engaging as a member of the multidisciplinary breast team, including attending relevant meetings
