Position Overview

Key Responsibilities
Locum Consultant in Neonatology
The chosen candidate will oversee the neonatal services at our institution, working alongside existing neonatal consultants and the multidisciplinary team. The post holder will integrate into the current consultant team to establish a 1:7 rota, as outlined below:
- 1 week in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) (covers Labour ward)
- 1 week in Special Care Unit 1 (SC1)
- 1 week in Special Care Unit 2 (SC2)/Postnatal Ward (PNW)
- 4 weeks dedicated to Clinics/Specialist Professional Activities (SPA)/Additional Professional Activities (APA)
- On Call Rota 1:7
- Direct Clinical Care (DCC) (NICU/LW/SC/PNW/Clinic/Admin/on-call) - 10 Programmed Activities (PA)
- Personal SPA -
- Clinical governance -
- Total programmed activities - 12 PA
Consultants are expected to conduct twice-daily ward rounds in the neonatal unit. The consultant on duty during the hot week will hold the emergency bleep and respond to neonatal crises. In non-hot weeks, consultants will manage clinics and administrative responsibilities while also providing education and training to junior staff, updating protocols, conducting audits, and engaging in clinical governance activities.
Consultants are also required to participate in departmental meetings, link meetings, serious incident reviews, perinatal quality and safety discussions, and mortality and morbidity reviews. The successful candidate will be expected to attend and represent the neonatal unit in these meetings as per the rota.
About Our Organization
We deliver healthcare services to the residents of three diverse London boroughs. A significant portion of our 7,800 permanent staff resides in the areas we serve, with a majority coming from black, Asian, and minority ethnic backgrounds. Our services extend to individuals in south west Essex, and we provide specialized neurosciences services to the entire county.
Our offerings encompass all major specialties typical of large acute hospitals, operating from two primary locations. We manage two of the busiest emergency departments in London, with over 300,000 visits recorded in a recent year. Additionally, we provide outpatient services at various community hospitals and clinics.
We take pride in our efforts to minimize patient wait times for necessary treatments. Our Elective Surgical Hub has received national accreditation, and our emergency care services have been recognized for significant improvements in efficiency.
We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre, Radiotherapy Centre, Hyper Acute Stroke Unit, and dedicated breast care service.
Job Requirements
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the neonatal service, collaborating with existing consultants and the multidisciplinary team.
The post holder will support the neonatal lead in clinical governance, perinatal optimization, and safety champion initiatives.
Qualifications
Essential
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- MRCPCH or equivalent qualification
- Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining a UK Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Paediatrics (Neonatal Medicine) after completing grid training or equivalent in Neonatal Medicine
Desirable
- UK recognized relevant extra-curricular courses
- Higher qualification, such as MD or Medical Education
- Neonatal Life Support (NLS) Instructor certification
