Deputy Head Gardener Job Opportunity

The Burford Recruitment Company is pleased to work with a prestigious private estate in seeking a highly skilled Deputy Head Gardener to join their team. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated and experienced gardening professional to take on a leadership role and contribute to the estate's beautiful gardens.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with the Head of Gardens and Parkland to develop and maintain the garden and walled garden to the highest standards.
  • Lead the garden team, ensuring effective and professional work standards, and oversee the line management of all garden staff.
  • Work with the Head of Gardens and Parkland on project planning and execution, and manage contractors to maintain aesthetic standards.
  • Uphold health and safety regulations, ensure compliance among team members, and oversee the purchasing of materials and uniforms.
  • Prune and maintain a variety of plants, manage soil and bed preparation, and oversee pest control.
  • Maintain cleanliness, manage watering schedules, and handle general plant care in the greenhouse and nursery.
  • Ensure the proper use and maintenance of garden machinery and tools.
Requirements:
  • Relevant horticultural qualifications (RHS Level 2 or equivalent)
  • Professional gardening experience, preferably in a large private garden
  • Comprehensive knowledge of garden design, hard landscaping, and machinery operation
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and strong communication skills
  • Flexibility and the ability to work under pressure
  • Passion for horticulture and a confident, positive attitude
Desirable:
  • Knowledge of floristry, cut flowers, houseplants, and orchids
  • Greenhouse cultivation experience
  • Health and safety qualification
  • PA1 and PA6 certification
