Primary Duties
Clinical Responsibilities
- Evaluate pediatric patients upon arrival and prioritize their clinical needs, ensuring efficient care delivery.
- Guide and supervise junior staff and students, equipping them with the necessary knowledge and resources for effective patient care.
- Maintain clear communication with nursing, medical, and ancillary staff.
- Administer medications safely in accordance with established policies and guidelines.
- Uphold high standards of patient care and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
- Ensure the privacy and dignity of young patients throughout their treatment.
- Develop a specialized area of clinical interest to enhance care services for children and their families.
- Provide a welcoming and secure environment for pediatric patients, ensuring separation from adult areas as per national guidelines.
- Continuously update clinical knowledge and skills, including advanced clinical roles through appropriate training.
- Facilitate safe discharge processes, collaborating with relevant healthcare professionals based on individual patient needs.
- Support children and their families, directing them to appropriate services as necessary.
- Identify child protection concerns and refer to the appropriate multidisciplinary team members.
Managerial Responsibilities
- Organize personal workload and assist junior staff in managing their responsibilities.
- Serve as a role model, mentor, and preceptor for junior staff and students.
- Ensure adherence to nursing procedures and policies, reporting any changes in patient conditions.
- Occasionally take charge of a group of pediatric patients.
- Communicate any departmental activities affecting patient care to the shift leader or lead nurse.
- Stay informed about clinical and professional developments in nursing, participating in audits and quality initiatives.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of new initiatives and nursing practices.
- Report incidents and complaints to the pediatric lead nurse or shift leader, completing necessary documentation.
- Assist in investigating complaints as required.
- Help manage departmental resources efficiently, being mindful of budgetary considerations.
Qualifications and Skills

- Registered Nurse (Paediatric)
- Mentorship qualification (or willingness to pursue)
- PILS certification
Desirable
- Emergency Nursing Course
- BSc or in progress
- APLS certification
- Other leadership training

- Proficiency in IV drug administration, cannulation, and phlebotomy
