Position Overview
The Forestry Commission oversees a vast expanse of public woodlands and national parks, contributing significantly to timber production and biodiversity conservation.
Our mixed woodlands yield approximately 100,000 m3 of timber annually, with a substantial portion being hardwood. The land management team is dedicated to habitat restoration, focusing on ancient woodlands and lowland heath, ensuring the preservation of areas critical for nature conservation and wildlife.
We are seeking a dedicated Forest Management Specialist to contribute to the ecological health of our woodlands, which encompass diverse environments from ancient broadleaf forests to productive conifer plantations.
Role Responsibilities
The ideal candidate will be a proactive and motivated individual who thrives in outdoor settings. This position entails a variety of forest management and maintenance duties, including:
- Tree planting and vegetation management
- Fencing and gate installation
- Chainsaw operations and timber assessment
- Utilizing maps and surveying tools for effective land management
This role is physically demanding and requires working outdoors in various weather conditions while using specialized equipment. Comprehensive training and necessary safety gear will be provided.
Key Objectives
The primary aim of this position is to execute a broad spectrum of management and maintenance tasks that align with district objectives.
Core Areas of Focus:
- Woodland Management: Employ appropriate techniques and tools for the regeneration and upkeep of woodlands and habitats.
- Conservation Efforts: Implement strategies for the management and restoration of diverse habitats, including heathland and wetland ecosystems.
- Recreational Facilities: Maintain and develop recreational pathways and amenities, ensuring a positive experience for visitors.
- Team Collaboration and Safety: Work effectively with colleagues, maintaining high standards of safety and operational efficiency.

Essential Qualifications:
- Practical experience in forestry or environmental management
- Proficiency with hand tools and chainsaw operations
