Chief Scientific Advisor to National Security

MI5 is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief Scientific Advisor to National Security to lead our science and technology efforts. As a key member of our team, you will provide strategic advice on national security science and technology to senior officials and ministers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide scientific and technical advice to the three intelligence agency heads and work in partnership with their leadership teams.
  • Advise on the direction of the agencies' organisational strategies and collaboration initiatives, particularly in the areas of data, technology, and innovation.
  • Develop understanding of the international science and technology landscape to help shape UK national security thinking and identify opportunities for collaboration with international partners.
  • Support, coordinate, and ensure the coherence of science and technology research and development programmes across the community.
  • Sponsor innovation and engagement with the National Security Strategic Investment Fund.
  • Oversee the MI5, SIS, and GCHQ Scientific Advisory Council.
  • Support relevant science and technology professions across the agencies and advocate for staff and their professional development and careers.
  • Represent the Government Chief Scientific Adviser and national security science in various HMG fora.
  • Engage with world-leading research groups, academia, and industry to build an external network of scientific and research expertise.
Requirements
  • Credibility as a scientist, engineer, or technologist, renowned in a relevant discipline.
  • Excellence in communication, able to connect across science, mission, and policy communities.
  • Commitment to personal development, growing capability in others, and strongly promoting diversity and inclusion.
