Deputy Laboratory Manager

This is a fantastic opportunity to work in our Microbiology department in Wolverhampton, within our state-of-the-art fast-paced laboratory. As a key member of the laboratory management team, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the laboratory operates to the required ISO 17025 standard in-line with the Eurofins QMS.
Key Responsibilities- Manage the day-to-day operations of the main production laboratory, supporting the department manager (production and technical) to deliver service levels to expected standards.
- Act as deputy to the Department Manager (Production & Technical) in respective areas.
- Prioritize the Health and Safety of the team and ensure all processes and risk assessments are reviewed to scheduled timelines and after any incident.
- Support and develop a zero-accident culture through robust hazard reporting, improvements, and audits.
- Develop a culture of continuous improvement that drives process efficiencies and operational excellence.
- Own the 5S process in the laboratory, utilizing the continuous improvement function to support and train the team to drive improvements.
- Support, coach, and mentor the team leaders under your remit to ensure they can deliver the required level of service, develop and support their teams, and instill the required standards within all roles.
- Knowledge of Laboratory Quality Management System to ensure compliance at all times with the policies, procedures, and associated documents.
- Ensure all work carried out complies with documented procedures for all aspects of laboratory work, that all relevant information concerning samples is recorded, that samples are handled correctly, that worksheets are kept in an orderly manner.
- Ensure staff are suitably trained and all training documents are suitably maintained, including ongoing competency.
- Ensure all equipment is maintained and serviced to the correct standard, ensuring it is all safe to operate and is fully calibrated.
- Ensure complaints and NCWs are completed to a high standard and in a timely manner.
- Work closely with the local quality team to ensure full compliance of all parts of ISO 17025 alongside customer-specific requirements.
- To ensure, in conjunction with the quality team, that EQA, IQC, and DPC systems are maintained, and non-conformances are investigated.
- Represent the laboratory in external audits (regulatory/client audits, etc.).
- Drive TAT to the highest possible level while maintaining a tight control on cost and resource levels.
- Manage waste through the laboratory, ensuring this is minimized.
- To manage the team, including recruitment, training, and development, mentoring, motivation, and disciplinary matters.
- Work closely with the Analytical Services/Customer Service team to ensure a high level of customer service.
- Support customer requirements and be a key link to ensure customer requirements are translated within the laboratory.
- As required, complete internal audits in-line with the audit schedule for the site.
- Understanding of ISO 17025, UKAS, key customer requirements, audit procedures, methods, etc.
- Proven experience in working to and exceeding targets.
- Experience of working with a broad range of internal and external customers.
- Competence in IT, including LIMS, spreadsheets, and databases.
- Experience working in a UKAS-accredited laboratory.
- Able to present complex information face-to-face.
- Strong knowledge of LIMS and instrument system integration to drive laboratory efficiencies.
- Strong people management skills.
- Strong management skills for performance/absence management.
