London, Greater London, United Kingdom Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Position Overview

Hepatobiliary Clinical Nurse Consultant Service Band 6/7 Based on Experience

An exceptional opportunity has emerged within the Hepatobiliary Clinical Nurse Consultant service at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.

You will collaborate with a highly skilled team to provide comprehensive care for patients experiencing liver, pancreatic, biliary, and gallbladder disorders, encompassing both malignant and benign conditions.

Strong communication and documentation skills are crucial, as the role involves delivering sensitive diagnoses and engaging with patients in clinical environments and during procedures.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for coordinating care for patients with suspected hepatobiliary cancers and serve as a key point of contact and information source. This includes managing surveillance and care for patients requiring long-term follow-up related to hepatobiliary issues.

The position entails supporting Gastroenterology and Upper GI surgical clinics, coordinating with other healthcare institutions regarding referrals, and fostering positive working relationships within the team and beyond.

Training and education will be provided to address any knowledge gaps as necessary.

Key Responsibilities

Establish and maintain effective communication with the multidisciplinary team (MDT), patients, and their families regarding treatment results and outcomes.

The role requires a degree of independence, clinical judgment, and decision-making capabilities.

The post holder will oversee clinical triage of urgent referrals, utilizing the appropriate models and assessing patients through telephone consultations or face-to-face clinics. Therefore, the applicant must possess expert knowledge of upper gastrointestinal anatomy, physiology, and psychological aspects relevant to this patient group to develop effective care plans.

The post holder should also have experience with suspected upper GI cancers and benign endoscopy and diagnostic pathways, collaborating with multidisciplinary meetings and clinical teams. Familiarity with Faster Diagnostic Standards and Referral to Treatment specifications is essential. Close collaboration with cancer pathway tracking teams will be necessary to maintain efficient timelines on patient tracking lists (PTLs) for this patient demographic. Candidates should ideally operate at an advanced practice level, possessing advanced clinical assessment skills and a non-medical prescribing qualification or a willingness to obtain one.
