University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) is seeking motivated and inspiring doctors to join our esteemed team of Consultants. This recruitment drive is part of our ongoing initiative to enhance critical care capacity.
Our current Intensive Care Unit (ICU) comprises 60 beds distributed across six specialized clinical areas. As a prominent acute and elective Trust, we manage over 3000 admissions annually to our adult critical care services, consistently achieving outcomes that surpass national averages as per ICNARC data.
Recent advancements include the integration of General, Cardiac, and Weston adult critical care services. Our unit was designated as a Veno-Venous ECMO and Severe Acute Respiratory Failure center in 2022. Additionally, we have recently established a Critical Care Outreach service on the Bristol site, complementing our well-regarded service in Weston.
This position is structured as a full-time role in terms of Programmed Activities (PAs), with flexibility for both full-time and part-time arrangements within the Consultant rota.
Main Responsibilities
This substantive position is integral to our efforts to expand critical care services. The ICU bedbase is strategically designed to accommodate a diverse range of clinical needs across two sites. Our team is responsible for managing a significant volume of critically ill patients, with a focus on maintaining high standards of care.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing expert clinical assessments and interventions for critically ill patients.
- Leading and participating in multi-disciplinary team discussions to optimize patient outcomes.
- Engaging in continuous professional development and contributing to the educational growth of junior staff.

Qualifications & Experience
Essential qualifications include:
- Full GMC registration.
- FFICM or equivalent qualification.
- CCT in Intensive Care Medicine (or equivalent) or nearing completion.
Desirable qualifications may include:
- Higher degree (PhD, MD).
