Position Overview

This role offers a unique opportunity for an individual to engage in a comprehensive 4-year apprenticeship in electrical healthcare engineering. Throughout this apprenticeship, the selected candidate will work towards achieving NVQ levels 2 and 3 in electrical engineering, which will equip them with essential theoretical knowledge vital for any engineering professional. The candidate will collaborate with a skilled healthcare engineering team, who will provide guidance and support in developing the practical skills necessary to become a fully qualified hospital engineer.

Upon successful completion of the required qualifications, the apprentice will join the team as a qualified member responsible for performing engineering maintenance tasks on all electrical services, systems, plant, and equipment (both planned and reactive maintenance), as well as undertaking electrical installation projects in compliance with current regulations. This team is dedicated to ensuring the operational continuity of clinical services and is committed to ongoing professional development through training and mentorship in the diverse systems they manage.

Key Responsibilities

The apprentice will be expected to undertake the following duties:

  1. Participate in relevant training programs, academic courses, and in-house mentoring to gain proficiency in the Trust's diverse mechanical and electrical systems.
  2. Utilize appropriate tools, machinery, and equipment safely and in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
  3. Assist senior staff with various maintenance tasks, new projects, and repairs as directed.
  4. After a training period, perform semi-skilled tasks independently under the supervision of a qualified tradesperson.
  5. Following adequate training, carry out semi-skilled work across different trades (both electrical and mechanical) with necessary oversight.
  6. Select and manage materials as required for tasks.
  7. Ensure that ward bed-head services are functioning safely and effectively for the benefit of patients and staff.
  8. Communicate and document information, reports, surveys, and results accurately.
  9. Demonstrate a basic understanding of computer systems and the information they provide.
  10. Ensure compliance with health and safety standards in all plant rooms and work areas.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • No prior experience is necessary, but a demonstrated interest in mechanical or electrical engineering through academic or personal pursuits is required.

Desirable

  • Relevant experience in an engineering environment is advantageous.

Educational Requirements

Essential

  • A minimum of 4 GCSEs, or equivalent, at grades A* to C/9 - 4, including Mathematics, English, and a science-related subject.

Desirable

  • At least 2 A Levels, or equivalent, in engineering or science-related subjects.

Skills and Attributes
