Fertility Nurse Specialist Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Fertility Nurse Specialist to join our multidisciplinary team at the Cotswold Fertility Unit (CFU). As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in providing comprehensive information and advice on our treatments, offering emotional support, and demonstrating excellent communication skills.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Assist in the daily running of the fertility clinic, coordinating treatment cycle plans and ensuring seamless patient care.
  2. Provide information and advice on treatment and emotional support to patients face-to-face and over the telephone, utilizing your excellent communication skills to build trust and rapport.
  3. Perform ultrasound scans for follicle tracking, baseline assessments, and early pregnancy assessment, utilizing your technical skills and knowledge to provide accurate results.
  4. Assess patients, plan, and implement care, providing specialist fertility support and advice about IVF and other treatments, ensuring that patients receive the highest level of care.
  5. Work within the HFEA Code of Practice, NMC Code of Practice, and performance standards set for Band 5/6 Nurses within Gloucestershire Hospitals Trust, upholding the highest standards of patient care and safety.
  6. Participate in data collection required by the Fertility Unit for statistics required by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, ensuring that data is accurate and up-to-date.
  7. Perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with relevant legislation, including the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Act (1990), the Code of Practice (8th Edition) 2008, and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) code of Professional Conduct.
  8. Analytical and judgemental skills are required for assessment of patients, planning, and implementation of care, providing specialist fertility support and advice about IVF and other treatments.
  9. Promote the Fertility Unit and improve communication by liaising with other departments within the hospital and other agencies effectively, providing information and teaching sessions as appropriate.
  10. In consultation with the multidisciplinary team, encourage innovation, research-based practice, and evaluation of new techniques within the Cotswold Fertility Clinic.
  11. Liaise with fertility network support groups, providing support and guidance to patients and their families.
  12. Promote health education within the unit, taking shared responsibility for ensuring an adequate supply of information leaflets for patients.
  13. Be responsible for your own professional development, acquiring new knowledge and skills within this specialized department, ensuring that you stay up-to-date with current issues.
Person Specification

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Fertility Nurse Specialist who meets the following criteria:

  • Registered Nurse or Midwife with NMC
  • Recognised teaching qualification (e.g., FLAP/998/997/730)
  • Degree-level qualification

Desirable qualifications include:

  • Accredited ultrasound qualification relevant to the area
  • Non-medical prescriber

Essential experience includes:

  • Clinical experience or interest in fertility
  • Considerable experience as a Registered Nurse or Midwife
