Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom Northumbria University Full time

POSITION OVERVIEW

We are in search of a Postdoctoral Research Associate with a strong background in human-computer interaction (HCI) and a keen interest in issues related to digital risks, privacy, and cybersecurity. This role is situated within Northumbria University, contributing to our UKRI-funded Centre for Digital Citizens.

The selected candidate will primarily operate within the Department of Psychology while engaging collaboratively with peers in Computer Science and/or Design. The focus will be on research pertinent to our 'Safe Citizen' initiative.

Our investigations delve into the challenges citizens face in fully participating in a digital society. This includes exploring themes of digital literacy, digital exclusion, and the implications of emerging technologies (such as generative AI) on citizens' lives.

Current projects examine various contexts, including the cybersecurity awareness of older adults, the influence of peers on digital vulnerability, the detection of deep fakes, and the effects of platform content moderation on creators.

The scope of work across these initiatives is diverse, allowing the appointed Fellow to shape their individual research portfolio.

We particularly welcome applicants with expertise in behavior modification, user-centered methodologies for trust and privacy, citizen-driven strategies for responsible AI, online risks, and digital exclusion.

As a member of a multidisciplinary team, the Postdoctoral Research Associate will engage in a variety of activities, which may include (based on individual skill sets): designing and conducting workshops, user-centered and participatory design sessions, qualitative and quantitative research design and analysis, as well as collaborating with stakeholders and partners.

The Fellow will be integrated into the Psychology and Communication Technology (PaCT) Lab but is expected to work alongside colleagues from various disciplines within the Centre for Digital Citizens, including those in Computing and Information Sciences and Design, as well as researchers from partner institutions.

This is a fixed-term position for a duration of 12 months.
