Role Overview:
The primary responsibility of this position is to deliver expert Mechanical Engineering guidance for the conception and advancement of innovative designs, as well as troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repair of existing products:
- Utilizing extensive product knowledge and advanced engineering principles, develop design concepts and solutions from foundational principles to fulfill project and client specifications, supported by sketches, calculations, and relevant documentation.
- Prepare and present clear Mechanical Development Plans, Design Scheme Data Packs, and other engineering details for both internal assessments and client discussions.
- Assume a Design Authority role by reviewing and approving datasets (drawings/MBD) to ensure compliance with required standards, accurate reflection of design intent, and adequate definition for manufacturing and inspection.
- Take charge of design risk management, identifying, defining, and overseeing work packages to mitigate design risks early in the product lifecycle.
- Demonstrate competence in validating and verifying requirements using appropriate tools (e.g., DOORS) and managing these throughout the engineering lifecycle.
- Oversee the work of senior and junior mechanical engineers and technicians, taking technical responsibility for the design solutions and technical documentation produced.
- Collaborate effectively across all engineering disciplines, engaging with technical specialists as necessary.
- Conduct Design Authority level evaluations on the work of other mechanical engineers, including designs, design data, calculations, and technical reports.
- Ensure adherence to departmental and company policies and procedures by Engineers and Technicians.
- Assist Team Leads, Projects, and Mechanical Functional Managers in preparing estimates for future design initiatives.
Required Skills and Experience:
Essential:
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or an equivalent combination of qualifications and experience.
- Meet the UK-SPEC requirements at the Chartered Engineer level.
- Extensive experience across the complete product design lifecycle, from concept to production, within an engineering context.
- Experience in preparing technical datasets (drawings/MBD) and design review documentation.
- Proficiency in CAD tools for creating design models.
Desirable:
- Experience in areas such as avionic systems, optical displays, mechatronics, electronics packaging, anthropometrics, composite design, additive manufacturing, and test and measurement equipment.
- Ability to utilize specialized dynamic, structural, and thermal analysis tools, including validation of their outputs.
- Experience in leading a mechanical or cross-discipline design team.
- Familiarity with the CREO CAD system, and experience with TeamCenter, DOORS, and JIRA would be advantageous.

About the Design Team:
The Mechanical Engineering Design team plays a crucial role in supporting the development of new products by providing design and analysis services across various projects, including head-worn and cockpit display systems, flight controls, and active inceptor programs. They also support internal production and external clients in the production, usage, and maintenance of equipment in service.
As a Senior Mechanical Engineering Leader, you will have the opportunity to drive innovation and provide technical direction to other Engineers and Technicians, transforming ideas into detailed schemes supported by calculations and reports to ensure compliance with requirements. You will be expected to deliver high-quality services to clients, on time and within budget, with minimal management oversight, and present design details directly to high-profile clients.
