Lead Operations Manager sought for Urban Design Group

The Urban Design Group (UDG) is in search of a dynamic Lead Operations Manager (part or full-time to be discussed) to oversee the daily functions of the organization, manage a small team of part-time personnel, assist in organizing and facilitating events, and collaborate with us to achieve our charitable goals.

About You and the Role

We aim to appoint a senior leader who will be accountable for the execution of a diverse array of supporting activities. These activities include both internal tasks, such as engaging with and enhancing our membership, resources, and financial stability, as well as external tasks, which involve organizing and executing events, and managing our online presence. You will:

be capable of working autonomously and be hands-on, as we establish a permanent support team; enjoy collaborating with our members, Executive Committee, and Trustees; and be proactive and self-driven.

While an extensive understanding of urban design is not mandatory, familiarity with the built environment sector and a passion for promoting effective placemaking would be advantageous. You should possess a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in a charitable or business setting, with a background in managing various operations for a small to medium-sized organization, including some leadership responsibilities. Experience in expanding a membership organization will be beneficial.

Although we have an office in London, we provide the flexibility of hybrid or remote work arrangements, with a regular presence in our London office to be determined. We conduct in-person events, which you will be involved in, alongside online engagements.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Development

Collaborate with the Strategic Director, Chair, Executive Board, and Editorial Board to formulate a new strategic plan and objectives for the Urban Design Group for the upcoming years. Ensure the operationalization and timely execution of this strategic plan and objectives, in alignment with established KPIs.

Internal Processes

Manage and enhance effective processes and systems for the operation of the Urban Design Group and monitoring its activities. Document and provide reports on the Urban Design Group's activities for internal and external oversight, governance, and compliance requirements.

Financial Oversight

Develop the annual budget for the Urban Design Group in collaboration with the Strategic Director, Treasurer, Executive Board, and Trustees, while overseeing daily financial management, tracking expenditures against the approved budget, and providing regular updates. Supervise the investment of the charity's reserves in conjunction with the Treasurer, Executive, and Trustees.

Human Resources

Manage HR processes for the Urban Design Group, including working with the Strategic Director to create an appropriate staffing structure to achieve the UDG's strategic objectives, leading the recruitment and management of staff and volunteers, ensuring due diligence is applied to EDI considerations.

Event Management

Oversee and facilitate the delivery of the Urban Design Group's annual event program across the UK, including conferences, seminars, tours, visits, webinars, and workshops.

Project Initiatives

Manage the Urban Design Group's various initiatives and projects, ensuring their effective implementation. Facilitate and operationalize the Urban Design Group's initiative to strengthen the connection and exchange between practice, research, and policy through engagement with academic institutions and policymakers at both local and national levels. Lead and supervise a team of staff and volunteers, ensuring that the work of the Urban Design Group is effectively communicated to its members and externally, through the website, social media, press engagement, and policy outreach. Promote and expand the membership of the Urban Design Group, including the development of new membership categories to attract new members and ensuring that existing members feel supported and engaged. Develop strategies to generate additional income for the organization through sponsorships, grants, and other sources to enhance the Urban Design Group's capacity to influence and support others.
