Position Overview:
We are looking for a dedicated Mechanical Technician to become an integral part of the Hypersonics Research Group within the Department of Engineering Science. This full-time role is focused on the operation and maintenance of advanced wind tunnel facilities, contributing to cutting-edge aerospace research.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide engineering design support and fabrication guidance for wind tunnel upgrades and experimental hardware.
- Manufacture intricate wind tunnel models and components in alignment with ongoing development programs and testing requirements.
- Assist in the operation of wind tunnels, including the initiation of hypersonic tests, routine reconfiguration, and servicing of precision components.
The successful candidate will collaborate closely with a dynamic team of researchers, including undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as external clients from both academic and industrial sectors. This role offers the opportunity to engage in aerospace research from conceptual engineering through to experimental execution.
Team Collaboration:
You will work alongside the Hypersonic Operations Manager to plan and execute experiments, as well as with the Tunnel Operator to conduct tests and provide essential engineering support. Additionally, you will coordinate with the on-site Mechanical workshop team to manage machining tasks.
Required Skills:
The ideal candidate should possess a well-rounded skill set in machining and workshop activities, with several years of relevant experience. Familiarity with various machining equipment is essential. While not mandatory, experience in CNC milling, welding, rig-based installations, or pressure system modifications would be advantageous. A willingness to learn and adapt to new technical skills is crucial, and appropriate training will be provided as necessary.
