Position Overview

The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, a globally recognized institution renowned for its extensive collections and expertise in plant and fungal diversity, conservation, and sustainable development, is seeking a Senior Research Leader in Seed Biology.

Kew Gardens, a prominent visitor attraction and UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with Wakehurst, our wild botanic garden housing the Millennium Seed Bank (MSB), serves as the foundation for this role.

The MSB boasts the world's most diverse seed collection, encompassing over 2.4 billion seeds from various regions, and has a rich history of research and publications focused on seed characteristics.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of Trait Diversity and Function, the successful candidate will:

  • Provide strategic direction for seed biology research initiatives at Kew.
  • Oversee Kew's ambitious program aimed at addressing the challenges related to the cryopreservation of unique species.
  • Establish collaborations with key academic and industrial partners on an international scale.
  • Lead the development of new research facilities at Wakehurst for the long-term preservation and study of seeds.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be an exceptional and motivating scientist, holding a relevant PhD and possessing a well-established international reputation within the scientific community.

Experience in:

  • Leading research teams
  • Securing funding for research projects
  • Mentoring researchers and supervising students

is essential. A strategic perspective on Kew's seed research, along with the ability to engage with various stakeholders across Kew Science, is crucial.

Additionally, experience in teaching and scientific outreach is considered advantageous.
