Main Responsibilities

Reporting to the Area Commercial Manager, the Senior Estimator will collaborate closely with the Estimating Manager. The primary focus of this role is to assist the Commercial Team in achieving budget forecasts through effective pricing strategies and management of the tendering process.

As a Senior Estimator, your responsibilities will include:

  • Negotiating and securing work contracts
  • Building and nurturing effective relationships with both new and existing clients, while working collaboratively within a team
  • Overseeing the preparation and submission of all pricing documentation for the contracting business, ensuring adherence to internal review protocols
  • Identifying and developing new business opportunities, ensuring high-quality, competitive tenders are submitted, and key contracts are successfully secured, considering business capacity, margins, and financial risks
  • Conducting pre-contract commercial assessments to pinpoint opportunities and risks in proposed contracts
  • Performing detailed evaluations of subcontractor and supplier quotations for inclusion in tenders and preparing tender handover reports for the operations team
  • Formulating and influencing bid strategies while researching market trends and data to enhance bid success
  • Ensuring compliance with all relevant policies and procedures, including Health and Safety, Environmental, and Sustainability standards
  • Mentoring and developing Apprentices within the team
The Ideal Candidate

Ideal candidates for the Senior Estimator position will possess a commercial estimating background, preferably within the highways surfacing sector. However, candidates with experience in civil engineering are also encouraged to apply.

As a Senior Estimator, you should be able to demonstrate:

  • Operational technical expertise, ideally within the highways sector
  • Experience in pricing various tenders, including local authority and major projects
  • The ability to cultivate relationships with internal and external stakeholders at various seniority levels to secure work and enhance profitability
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • The capability to influence others and work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Strong commercial awareness and the ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Attention to detail
  • A strong drive for success, improvement, and innovation
  • Proven sales abilities and negotiation skills
  • Familiarity with NEC 3 and 4 forms of contract
  • Experience with Causeway 3 Estimating software (desirable)
