Position Overview

We are pleased to announce a rewarding opportunity for a Lead Speech and Language Practitioner to become a vital part of our dedicated team, enhancing communication abilities for individuals in need.

As a member of a collaborative multi-disciplinary team within an educational setting, the selected candidate will deliver Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) services to children aged 3-19 who experience Speech, Language, and Communication Needs (SLCN), learning disabilities, and/or complex conditions.

This role may also be integrated with other nearby positions, providing opportunities for broader experience in various service areas, including Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), assessments for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and management of swallowing difficulties (dysphagia).

The ideal candidate will contribute to the existing team within the educational environment, which comprises Speech and Language Therapists and Assistants, and will collaborate closely with children, young individuals, their families, and the educational workforce. They will receive support from our extensive team and will have the opportunity to influence both innovative services in Special Educational Needs (SEN) education and our organization as a whole.

The successful candidate will promote best practices throughout the educational institution, conduct assessments, and implement interventions both directly and indirectly. Depending on the candidate's skills, experience, and enthusiasm, the role may include overseeing junior Speech and Language Therapists and Assistants.

Core Duties

A comprehensive job description will be available later in this advertisement; however, here are some key responsibilities:

  • Deliver speech and language therapy services to children, both directly and through support to their families and the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Conduct speech, language, and communication assessments for students in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team and other Speech and Language Therapists and Assistants.
  • Maintain accurate records and provide detailed reports.
  • Establish therapy targets and monitor progress.
  • Provide interventions on an individual or group basis as necessary.
  • Develop and demonstrate SLT programs and group activities for students.
  • Manage a personal caseload and take responsibility for a designated area of service, working independently.
  • Collaborate as a member of the multi-disciplinary team, contributing to the planning, development, and delivery of an effective and efficient service.
  • Participate actively in team activities, including:
    • Clinical supervision through regular meetings, mentoring, and performance reviews.
    • Ongoing professional development and implementation of service enhancements and evidence-based practices.
    • Supervision of SLT student placements.
    • Induction and support of Speech and Language Therapy Assistants and volunteers.
    • Development of SLT services and training initiatives.
    • Evaluation and monitoring of services to demonstrate impact and quality.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree or Master's in Speech and Language Therapy.
  • Registration with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) and Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Desirable

  • Relevant training, such as Elklan or Communication Boards.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience working with children with complex needs, their families, and the multi-agency team.

Desirable

  • Three or more years of experience as a Speech and Language Therapist with children with special educational needs.
  • Experience with children on the autism spectrum.
  • Familiarity with AAC, including signing and communication boards.
  • Experience working within a multi-agency team.
