Position Overview
Laboratory Educational Support Specialist
The primary role of this position is to provide assistance with educational support services in laboratory settings for various scientific disciplines at the University of Minnesota. This role is integral to fostering an environment characterized by respect, inclusivity, collaboration, and professionalism, which aligns with the mission of the University. The laboratory courses may encompass subjects such as chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, biology, and physics. A significant focus will be on supporting laboratory services located within designated areas of the campus while collaborating with other staff to enhance laboratory activities throughout the institution.
Key Responsibilities
- Laboratory Management (50%)
Organize, set up, and ensure compliance with all regulatory standards within laboratory environments. This includes:- Arranging laboratory materials for both immediate use and storage, ensuring accessibility for others.
- Overseeing the preparation and maintenance of laboratory spaces, ensuring adequate inventory of supplies.
- Conducting thorough clean-up operations pre and post-instruction, including the proper disposal of hazardous materials.
- Managing waste collection and ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
- Supervising student workers and providing guidance on safety procedures.
- Preparation and Ordering (30%)
Handle the procurement and preparation of essential materials for laboratory courses, which includes:- Identifying necessary media, reagents, and specimens for each lab session.
- Placing timely orders for supplies and maintaining cultures of various biological specimens.
- Performing calculations to ensure accurate preparation of laboratory materials.
- Support for Faculty and Students (20%)
Assist teaching staff and students during laboratory courses by:- Coordinating and managing experiments as required.
- Monitoring laboratory activities to promptly address any arising issues.
- Preparing necessary equipment and supplies for lectures and experiments.
Work Environment
This position is full-time and requires a commitment to working on campus, with a structured schedule that aligns with academic class times.
Qualifications
Required:
A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific field along with a minimum of two years of related experience, or a combination of education and experience totaling six years.
Preferred:
A Master’s degree in a related field with additional experience, alongside demonstrated laboratory skills and knowledge of safety practices.
