Job Purpose
The Operations team at BBC Wales is in search of a dedicated and proactive individual to fill the role of a Gaffer. This position will focus on ensuring electrical safety and compliance within the Operations Executive framework.
As a Gaffer, you will oversee the daily activities of production electricians, ensuring the provision of lighting and electrical services for various operations. The role involves rigging, operating, and de-rigging electrical and production lighting apparatus.
Additionally, you will be responsible for planning production-related electrical and lighting setups, effectively achieving program goals while considering the limitations of the working environment, time constraints, available resources, and team capabilities.
The role requires operational involvement and the execution of craft operations across diverse productions.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
Execute the full spectrum of Gaffer duties during events, in studios, on outside broadcasts, and for single camera operations. Provide daily supervision to the team of Production Electricians engaged in various productions. Ensure the safe design of temporary electrical systems established by the Electrical team. Implement a testing and acceptance protocol for these temporary systems while staying informed about industry legislation and updates. Organize and manage inventory of materials and replacement components necessary for routine maintenance. When lighting needs exceed available stock, evaluate costs and arrange for the rental of suitable equipment, coordinating its logistics. Minimize the need for precise adjustments of luminaires through effective rough setting of the lighting rig. Maintain a comprehensive understanding of Health & Safety legislation, upholding the BBC's high standards. Flexibility is essential, as the work aligns closely with production demands, including weekends and travel. Ability to work under tight production deadlines while demonstrating strong motivation. Address daily challenges and provide solutions, recommending enhancements as necessary. Manage ad hoc projects under the direction of the Operational management team. Advise colleagues on safe rigging, moving, and de-rigging of technical equipment. Provide support or assistance to general base operations.Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience
Proven technical knowledge and experience in the entertainment industry or a related field, with experience in team supervision. Capability to perform electrical installation tasks in accordance with current IET Wiring regulations BS7671 18th Edition. Familiarity with BS7909 code of practice for temporary electrical systems in entertainment, having completed relevant training. Ability to undertake physically demanding tasks, including manual handling and rigging, working at heights, and operating equipment vehicles with a valid driving license. Possession of a Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services or a similar qualification, along with the relevant level 3 technical certificate demonstrating recognized industry training. Flexibility is crucial, as the work closely follows production requirements, including weekends and travel. Ability to meet tight production deadlines while demonstrating high motivation and a willingness to learn and grow. Excellent communication skills, tact, and diplomacy, with the ability to engage with individuals at all levels and produce clear, concise written documentation. Broad technical knowledge, including an understanding of diverse and complex systems.About the BBC
