Consultant in General Paediatrics with Special Interest in Eating Disorders

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the rapidly innovating children and young people's Eating Disorder and Acute General Paediatrics department at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. This role has been part of a 12-month pilot, which has been successful and is now being funded substantively. The post holder will work collaboratively across two organisations, as a Consultant Paediatrician within the Leicester Children's Hospital and supporting the children and young person's eating disorder team within Leicester Partnership Trust (LPT) (community provider), with the aim of improving the care pathways for children and young people with mental health and eating disorders in both the community and in the acute hospital.
Main ResponsibilitiesThe post holder will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement for children and young people with eating disorders. This includes responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the service and department. The post holder will work collaboratively with a wide multidisciplinary team, including experienced psychiatrists, psychologists, community nurses, occupational therapists, and trainees of all disciplines within LPT, as well as a dedicated Clinical Mental Health lead and dedicated dietician.
Key Duties- Participate in the consultant cover and service provision for the General Paediatric Service, including the Consultant of the Week (COW) rota.
- Participate in the Children's Acute Team (CAT) Rota, providing Consultant-led care at the front door, in conjunction with colleagues from the Paediatric Emergency Department (PED).
- Participate in the General Paediatric Consultant on-call service, including 24-7 out-of-hours cover for the Children's Hospital.
- Promote and strengthen links with colleagues from Primary Care, including GPs and AHPs.
- Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.
- To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of patients.
- To promote new ways of working and co-ordinating care for patients in the community and to ensure that services are based on effective and integrated partnerships across the health community.
- Take part in multidisciplinary case conferences.
- Supervise and train junior medical staff.
- To be involved in appraising and assessing juniors.
- Teaching, research, and administration.
- To proactively develop the service.
- To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
The post holder will be expected to have:
- Effective participation in and a commitment to clinical audit.
- Participation in a quality improvement programme.
- Experience of quality improvement work and audit.
The post holder will also be expected to have:
- MB BS or Equivalent.
- Current APLS Certification.
- MRCP/MRCS or Equivalent.
- Full GMC Registration.
The post holder will be expected to have knowledge of the care and management of paediatric eating disorder patients, as well as extensive knowledge of the physical risks of eating disorders. The post holder will also be expected to have the ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems.
Working ArrangementsThe post holder will be expected to work collaboratively with a wide multidisciplinary team, including experienced psychiatrists, psychologists, community nurses, occupational therapists, and trainees of all disciplines within LPT, as well as a dedicated Clinical Mental Health lead and dedicated dietician. The post holder will also be expected to participate in teaching and training of junior staff and other clinical staff groups.

- Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication with patients and colleagues.

- Experience of leading teams and awareness of leadership styles.
The post holder will be expected to have a commitment to quality improvement and a willingness to participate in clinical audit and quality improvement programmes.
