The challenges we face are escalating, particularly with the rise of generative AI.

At Foxglove, we strive to uphold the rule of law against the tech giants that disrupt our public discourse, workplaces, and social interactions. Our efforts focus on reducing the influence of these anti-democratic entities and holding them accountable for their treatment of employees. We also advocate for transparency and fairness in the use of data and algorithms by public institutions.

Our organization has a proven history of success. We have initiated landmark legal actions aimed at reforming harmful business practices in the tech industry, supported over 180 Facebook content moderators in their fight for union recognition, and championed the establishment of Africa's first content moderators' union. We have also engaged with regulators to challenge the monopolistic practices of tech companies.

The Role

The Advocacy Director will be instrumental in shaping Foxglove's outreach efforts. Collaborating with the co-Executive Directors and the Head of Communications, you will develop and execute a comprehensive advocacy strategy to enhance our visibility and impact. This senior leadership role also involves supporting essential organizational functions, including fundraising and strategic planning, while overseeing the Head of Communications and various consultants.

Effective advocacy requires that issues surrounding technology and its misuse are communicated in ways that resonate with a broad audience. The core responsibility of this position is to conceptualize and implement strategies that make these critical issues accessible to all.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement Foxglove's advocacy and communications strategy.
  • Public Engagement: Ensure Foxglove actively shapes public discourse on technology and AI, maintaining a prominent presence.
  • Opportunity Identification: Collaborate with co-Executive Directors to identify legal, campaign, and political opportunities for intervention.
  • Organizational Development: Contribute to overall leadership and strategic growth alongside the co-Executive Directors.

Communications and Media:

  • Oversee the quality of Foxglove's external communications.
  • Utilize innovative content and tactics to engage and influence target audiences.
  • Manage proactive and reactive media relations effectively.
  • Enhance Foxglove's public profile by sharing compelling narratives across various channels.
  • Advance non-news communication initiatives such as documentaries and podcasts to support our goals.

Advocacy:

  • Design and execute our advocacy strategy.
  • Formulate proactive policy positions and engage with decision-makers.
  • Build and maintain relationships with government officials, regulators, and policymakers to drive political change.
  • Stay informed on current affairs to identify challenges and opportunities relevant to Foxglove's mission.
  • Prepare written materials for regulatory bodies and international organizations.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Foster partnerships with other organizations, unions, and legal entities.
  • Monitor media and academic reports to identify advocacy opportunities.
  • Support co-Executive Directors in promoting sustainable growth and cultivating an inclusive organizational culture.

Person Specification:

Essential:

  • Over 10 years of experience in a senior leadership role focused on advocacy or strategic communications.
  • Demonstrated political acumen.
  • Proven ability to identify opportunities, drive change, and achieve results.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to simplify complex topics.
  • Strong networking and presentation capabilities.
  • Experience leading high-performing teams.

Desirable:

  • Professional background in areas such as antitrust, labor rights, algorithmic governance, or technology justice.
