Job Description

NRL Teesside is seeking a highly skilled Operations Director to lead and manage day-to-day operations of the Redcar facility. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the operational process team and maintenance team.

The Operations Director will lead the site in achieving excellence in:

  • Health and Safety
  • Product Quality
  • Asset Performance
  • Utilisation and Sustainability
  • Operational Excellence and Efficiencies
  • Management and Development of Human Resources

The Operations Director will have two main accountabilities within the 24-hour, 7-day facility:

  • Ensure the plant is operating to its maximum efficiency and capability to meet business KPIs.
  • Ensure all duties are safely carried out in compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and guidance notes.
Key Responsibilities

The Operations Director will be responsible for:

  • Leading daily operations of the business unit.
  • Managing overall manufacturing operations capacity and interactions between departments (manufacturing, supply chain, planning, etc.).
  • Leading improvement plans to ensure the achievement of budgets and overall performance targets through the management team.
  • Leading the operations team to deliver operational excellence, ensuring individual and departmental performance targets and KPIs are met.
  • Achieving and exceeding EBITDA targets by ensuring revenue targets are achieved and costs are controlled in line with business objectives.
  • Managing human resources to maximise performance, carrying out line management functions relating to personnel issues.

The planning horizons involved in this role are varied, requiring immediate decisions for day-to-day operational issues, but also involving change management and improvement activities that may require 3 months' planning, and larger development and expansion projects that may be in the planning stage for longer than 6 months.

The successful candidate will be commercially and financially astute, with the desire to contribute and fundamentally shape operational strategy and thinking.

They will demonstrate the ability to lead and manage teams, deliver strong results, and plan and coordinate the manufacturing of products in compliance with company goals and objectives.

The Operations Director will establish and control conditions of production to satisfy customer and quality specifications, participate actively in standardisation, cost reduction, and budget management, and direct line managers in the execution of operational strategies and plans.

They will also organise and direct workflow to satisfy production demands in a cost-efficient manner, investigate and analyse new products and processes, develop and motivate improvements to production processes, and maintain employee safety and morale by creating a safe working environment.

The Operations Director will maintain optimum employment levels through selecting, interviewing, and training personnel, liaising with sales managers on planning and predicting customer orders to satisfy deliveries, and develop and implement systems for employee involvement.

They will ensure that all employees understand their individual objectives and achieve/improve financial targets by managing manufacturing processes to ensure full utilisation.

The post-holder must be able to demonstrate experience of managing within the recycling industry and have a qualification in either Operations or Leadership Management, or hold a Manufacturing Engineering or Business Degree or equivalent with leadership experience outside of recycling.

They will also possess:

  • Qualification in Operations or Leadership Management
  • Intermediate Microsoft package IT skills in Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
  • Management-level Health & Safety qualification
  • Full current car driving licence
  • Qualification in performance management
  • Degree-level or equivalent in Business Administration or Engineering

Experience:

  • Managing at a senior level

  • Management of multi-million-pound project start-up

Technical Knowledge:

  • In-depth knowledge of plastics recycling processes
