Job Description

The NIHR is seeking a highly skilled individual with extensive expertise in the UK cancer research funding landscape to fill a key role as the NIHR's Cancer Portfolio Lead.

This is an exciting opportunity for a strategic thinker with a deep understanding of the UK's funding ecosystem to make a significant impact at the forefront of medical innovation.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Maintain an overview of NIHR's cancer research portfolio, including commissioning portfolio analysis.
  • Provide coordination in cancer research funding, working closely with other cancer research funders, such as Cancer Research UK.
  • Contribute to the development of responses to Parliamentary Questions and Ministerial Briefings.
  • Represent NIHR at meetings with external stakeholders in the cancer research field, including Cancer Research UK and the Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission.
  • Work with relevant research managers to oversee major NIHR/DHSC cancer research funding.
  • Provide expert advice to DHSC Science, Research & Evidence colleagues.
  • Act as a focal point for cancer-related support questions, such as nominations for funding committees.

Organisational Relationships:

  • The postholder will work collaboratively across all NIHR Coordinating Centres.
  • Working across the broader UK cancer research landscape.
  • Work closely with colleagues in the DHSC's Science, Research & Evidence Directorate.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Biomedical science degree relevant to cancer research or equivalent expertise.
  • Worked in a research funding organisation, policy body.
  • Knowledge of the health and care research landscape, particularly in cancer research.
  • An understanding of clinical research in the NHS and the NIHR's involvement.
  • A strategic thinker able to interpret complex information.

Desired Criteria:

  • A postgraduate degree in a relevant area.
  • Previous experience of working with the NIHR.
