Chief Editor for BMJ Military Health
BMJ Group is seeking a proactive and innovative Chief Editor for BMJ Military Health, a premier journal dedicated to military medicine.
The ideal candidate must be a healthcare professional with a background in military service. A medical degree is essential, along with a proven track record of significant contributions to the field, evidenced by a robust publication history in military health.
The successful applicant will possess editorial experience in managing submissions, a dedication to educational advancement, and exceptional interpersonal abilities. They will serve as a representative of the journal, adhering to the highest ethical standards and editorial guidelines while actively enhancing and promoting the publication. The Chief Editor should leverage their extensive global network to identify growth opportunities in military health research and introduce novel content or emerging topics to the journal.
This role is structured as an independent contractor position, with an initial term of five years. The Chief Editor will be responsible for executing the editorial vision and ensuring the quality of the journal's content, supported by their chosen editorial team and BMJ. Comprehensive editorial training and technical assistance will be provided, along with strategic direction. An annual honorarium and additional benefits will be offered, along with experienced editorial office support.
The time commitment will vary based on the editorial team's configuration, but is anticipated to be approximately one day per week. Collaborative applications are welcome for candidates interested in working together as a team.
Key Responsibilities
The Chief Editor will oversee all content published in the journal, including:
- Delivering high-quality and engaging material for a diverse readership
- Leading and fostering a diverse and supportive team of highly qualified international colleagues as part of the editorial team
- Ensuring the integrity of the review process and publishing ethics, providing guidance to authors and reviewers as necessary
- Establishing procedures for effective manuscript triage and review, collaborating closely with the editorial team to ensure prompt responses to authors
- Managing the journal's responses to appeals, complaints, suggestions from readers, and ethical inquiries regarding published works
- Enhancing the journal's value by commissioning editorials, reviews, educational content, and online materials, as well as seeking opportunities for topic collections and supplements
- Building and nurturing collaborative relationships with organizations and events to elevate the journal's international reputation and visibility

BMJ Military Health boasts a rich legacy of over a century in publication, originally known as the Journal of the Royal Army Medical Corps. It also encompasses the Journal of the Royal Navy Medical Services, which ceased publication as a separate entity in 2019.
The journal features a blend of pioneering academic research, comprehensive review articles, insightful commentaries, educational pieces, and editorials. It is published bimonthly and maintains an active presence on social media platforms.
