Position Overview

We invite applications from qualified individuals for the role of Fellow in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care.

To be eligible for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Possession of full GMC registration.
  • Experience in anaesthesia.
  • Completion of Final FRCA or an equivalent qualification.
  • Current CRB clearance.

This fellowship is designed for a duration of 12 months.

We seek candidates who have a keen interest in educational initiatives and/or audit projects, and who are prepared to lead and implement such initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

This role presents an exciting opportunity for motivated and ambitious professionals aiming to advance their careers in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia. The institution performs a significant volume of adult cardiac and thoracic surgeries annually, providing extensive opportunities to develop independence in this specialty.

Fellows will receive training in both 2D and 3D Perioperative Transoesophageal Echocardiography and FICE, leading to accreditation in these critical areas. The department has recently acquired advanced simulation technology, including a Vimedix multimodality ultrasound simulator, which supports training in cardiac anatomy, TOE & TTE, chest ultrasound, critical care echocardiography, and FAST scanning. Successful candidates will be guaranteed a place in the institution's esteemed FICE course and the internationally recognized trans-oesophageal ECHO course.

Job Duties

The Fellow will be responsible for providing anaesthesia services for both theatre and catheterization lab sessions, as well as ongoing patient care within the combined Adult Intensive Care Unit. Participation in the on-call rota is expected. The Fellow will work under the direct or indirect supervision of a consultant, who will determine the cases the Fellow is prepared to manage independently.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Contributing to departmental operations and responsibilities.
  • Developing and maintaining systems to promote clinical audit within the department.
  • Engaging in clinical governance processes to uphold high standards of practice as outlined by GMC guidelines.
  • Taking charge of personal Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development with the Trust's support.
  • Participating in clinical teaching activities.
  • Ensuring timely reporting of adverse clinical incidents in accordance with Trust policy.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice.
  • Final FRCA or equivalent qualification.
  • Prior experience in an anaesthetic role.

Desirable:

  • Evidence of adequate Continuing Medical Education.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching at a postgraduate level.

Research and Audit:

Essential:

  • Understanding of audit principles and personal experience in audit activities.

Desirable:

  • Higher research qualifications (MD, PhD, or equivalent).
  • Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification.
  • Publications or a background in research activities.
