Lead Clinical Specialist in Palliative Care

Position Overview

The Specialist Palliative Care team comprises a dedicated group of Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS), a Practice Educator, and Consultants who collaborate to provide exceptional support across inpatient adult services. This role is ideal for medical professionals aspiring to advance their careers in palliative medicine, with opportunities for portfolio development available.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the CNS team to oversee the corporate caseload at Bedford Hospital, conducting new patient evaluations and offering medical support to nursing staff.

• Work alongside medical colleagues to ensure daily management of patients, guaranteeing they receive thorough medical assessments and appropriate care.

• Regularly review patient cases with medical peers and multidisciplinary team members, formulating management plans in close coordination with ward teams.

• Actively participate in multidisciplinary ward team meetings.

• Attend to the needs of patients and their families, engaging in family meetings and case discussions as necessary.

• Liaise with General Practitioners and other Primary Healthcare Team members to provide support for community patients.

• Offer medical advice and consultations to hospital staff and follow up on outpatient consultations as required.

• Maintain accurate, professional, and timely records.

• Ensure all prescribing aligns with hospital policies and legal requirements.

• Collaborate with various health professionals to plan and review necessary care.

• Support the CNS team, including nurse prescribers, with clinical and educational supervision.

• Provide guidance on ethical considerations related to patient care.

• Work with Governance and Clinical teams to uphold and enhance clinical standards.

• Contribute to the End of Life Strategy through involvement in educational programs.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Medical Degree

Desirable:

  • Additional relevant clinical experience
  • MRCP

Registration:

Essential:

  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practice

Clinical Experience:

Essential:

  • Comprehensive experience in District General Hospital (DGH) settings
  • Experience at Internal Medicine Training (IMT) level
  • Ability to work autonomously while recognizing limitations and seeking senior advice when necessary

Desirable:

  • Experience in palliative care

Clinical Effectiveness:

Essential:

  • Understanding of audit principles

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • Experience with audits

Teaching:

Essential:

  • Interest and capability to contribute to the education of junior doctors and medical students

Desirable:

  • Publications and presentations
