About the Role:

The Tax Team plays a crucial role in ensuring that the University adheres to its tax obligations both domestically and internationally, while maximizing the benefits of available tax reliefs. Our goal is to simplify tax-related processes for our staff, making them as efficient and clear as possible.

As an integral member of the Tax Team, you will assist the University in fulfilling its statutory reporting duties and support the broader University community in managing tax matters effectively. Navigating VAT can often be challenging for University personnel, and your expertise will be invaluable in providing straightforward guidance on VAT inquiries and occasionally on direct taxes. Additionally, you will facilitate the smooth import and export of goods essential for the University's diverse research initiatives. This position offers you a unique perspective on the various activities of a prominent research institution and the associated tax implications.

With a solid foundation in VAT principles, you will benefit from the extensive experience within the Tax Team, gaining insights into the tax challenges faced by the University and the higher education sector at large. You will also develop a comprehensive understanding of the financial systems utilized for tax management. Your inquisitive nature and meticulous attention to detail will be encouraged as you seek enhancements in our VAT management processes and the communication of indirect tax information to staff.

Key Skills and Qualifications:

Your most significant attributes will include a strong knowledge of VAT, a logical mindset with excellent numeracy skills, and the capability to provide sound advice, even when faced with challenges. Additionally:

  • A relevant vocational qualification and applicable work experience OR educational background to Standard Grade/National 5 (or equivalent) along with relevant work experience.
  • Comprehension of various VAT rates, VAT reliefs, and the principles of Partial Exemption.
  • Familiarity with financial reporting systems.
  • A logical, focused, and constructive approach to problem-solving.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in work.
  • Proficiency in Excel, particularly in utilizing formulas.
  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize personal workload.
