About Our Organization

Department Overview

The University Health Service operates as an NHS GP practice dedicated to addressing the health requirements of the student body at The University of Sheffield. We offer a variety of NHS services tailored to meet specific needs.

Our team at UHS includes a diverse group of GPs, Nurse Practitioners, Practice Nurses, and Health Care Assistants, all supported by our reception and administrative staff. Additionally, the Practice employs or collaborates with various roles as part of the Primary Care Network contract, functioning as a unified entity PCN.

Job Duties

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead the nursing team both strategically and operationally, identifying opportunities to enhance the delivery of safe and effective patient services.
  • Advocate for nurse-led services at practice, Primary Care Network, and city levels.
  • Directly manage nursing staff to ensure they possess the necessary skills, support, and motivation to fulfill their roles while contributing to the service's overall objectives.
  • Engage in planning and delivery of practice-based commissioning at both practice and Primary Care Network levels.
  • Collaborate closely with other management and administrative team members to maximize participation in screening and immunization initiatives.
  • Assess the delivery of nursing services, including urgent care, and contribute to broader access evaluations and service redesign. Propose enhancements and innovations to improve patient access.
  • Establish priorities to aid in long-term workforce and resource planning.
  • Participate in maintaining protocols and attend relevant meetings to stay informed.
  • Develop and sustain professional connections with colleagues in the wider community.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Serve as the initial point of contact within the practice for patients presenting with undiagnosed issues, utilizing skills in history taking, physical examination, problem-solving, and clinical decision-making to establish diagnoses and appropriate management plans.
  • Conduct triage via online, telephone, and face-to-face interactions for patients seeking access to services.
  • Provide safe, evidence-based, cost-effective, individualized patient care, referring patients to other services or agencies as necessary.
  • Occasionally work outside of standard hours to support vaccination campaigns, health promotion initiatives, and other events.
  • Maintain an understanding of data governance issues.
  • Engage with the practice's clinical governance framework, including safeguarding, significant event reporting, whistleblowing, and duty of candour policies.
  • Continuously update personal professional knowledge in relevant practice areas and share new skills or knowledge beneficial to the entire practice team.
  • Perform other duties commensurate with the grade and scope of the position.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Professional clinical registration (NMC/HCPC) with demonstrable post-registered management experience in Primary Care.
  • Non-Medical prescriber and Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Practice, including Advanced Physical Assessment.

Experience

Essential

  • Proven ability to develop policy and strategy, ensuring nursing services align with the overall objectives of the service, and actively participate in the strategic development of the service as part of the broader management team.
  • Experience managing a large, complex clinical team.
  • Proficiency in reviewing individual and team performance and integrating organizational strategy into individual performance planning.
  • Capability to lead, manage, motivate, and develop others on both personal and team levels.
  • Strong negotiation and influencing skills with a range of stakeholders, including key decision-makers.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a busy environment while fostering a positive team culture.
  • Effective time management skills to deliver care safely and competently.
  • Excellent customer service skills, with experience in efficiently responding to inquiries via phone and email.
