Position Overview

We are looking for a skilled and dedicated registered children's nurse to oversee our dynamic children's inpatient services at the Royal Free Hospital, Hampstead.

The successful candidate will deliver clinical, managerial, and professional guidance to nursing personnel at all levels within their designated area, ensuring that nursing care is provided to the highest standards and that nursing resources are utilized efficiently. The role will involve active participation in the ongoing execution of the nursing and midwifery strategy, in close collaboration with senior matrons and the head of nursing. Additionally, the individual will fulfill key responsibilities associated with the matron role, focusing on the achievement and assessment of quality and clinical performance metrics while ensuring that all aspects of service delivery are grounded in patient and service user experiences. The position is pivotal in the enhancement of services and the maintenance of effective governance frameworks, ensuring that nursing care is consistently delivered with dignity and compassion. The post holder will supervise departmental ward sisters, charge nurses, and clinical nurse specialists, dedicating at least 20% of their time to clinical practice. They will also serve as a deputy for the senior matron and head of children's nursing when necessary.

2. Leadership and Management

Provide a visible presence within clinical areas and lead the delivery of high-quality care.

Ensure that patient needs are prioritized in care delivery, achieving trust and national standards for clinical quality, safety, and patient experience.

Provide professional, clinical, and managerial leadership to nursing and associated staff, ensuring the provision of a high-quality, responsive nursing service.

Be accountable for all aspects of quality management related to nursing and clinical areas.

Lead workforce and financial planning for nursing and support services within your areas of responsibility and collaborate across the trust to support these initiatives.

Support the development and implementation of clinical governance initiatives in conjunction with the senior matron and head of children's nursing.

Lead improvements in nursing practices within your areas of responsibility in line with local and national agendas and patient feedback.

Maintain a thorough understanding of safeguarding procedures and be knowledgeable about safeguarding triggers and risks.

Ensure compliance with mandatory training requirements for all staff.

3. Overseeing and Developing Staff

Ensure all staff have access to and adhere to Trust/departmental policies and procedures.

Oversee and ensure the development of all staff within your areas of responsibility.

Support sisters/charge nurses and specialist nurses in developing management and leadership capabilities to facilitate effective clinical area operations.

Manage timely and effective recruitment and retention of staff in collaboration with the Human Resources department.

Utilize Trust HR Policies and Procedures to manage clinical and non-clinical performance standards, as well as sickness and absence management.

Ensure appraisals are conducted for all staff, identifying training needs and resources.

Maintain up-to-date records of mandatory training levels.

Address complaints as they arise through direct communication and, when appropriate, investigate relevant complaints and provide responses.

Be user-aware and engage professionally and courteously with all users, including patients, relatives, carers, staff, and the general public, fostering this approach within your areas of responsibility.

Collaborate with senior/managerial staff to highlight any identified issues.

Serve as a deputy for the senior matron and head of children's nursing during planned and unplanned absences, providing cross-cover for matrons within your directorate.

Contribute to business, professional, and strategic planning within the Division and the organization as a whole.

Ensure sisters/charge nurses and specialist nurses identify and manage education, training, and support needs of all staff within their departments in relation to service requirements.

4. Patient Care Management

Act as a role model by providing effective professional leadership in relevant clinical areas and demonstrating competent and accountable pediatric clinical practice.

Maintain a consistent, visible presence in clinical areas of responsibility, ensuring accessibility for patients, families, carers, and staff.

Demonstrate knowledge of contemporary clinical practices, explore new ideas, and introduce positive, evidence-based changes in line with local and national initiatives, including NICE Guidance.

Adapt patient care to provide solutions to complex and unusual problems, including infection control outbreaks.

Monitor and act on user feedback to enhance patient care.

Ensure that patient-centered values and user feedback are integral to any service changes or developments.

Ensure that patient care is sensitive to the needs of a diverse population.

Actively support the Senior Matron and Head of Nursing in achieving key performance indicators related to nursing quality.

Establish connections with other individuals and specialist organizations relevant to service specialties, and access diverse sources of information to maximize exposure to reliable information.

Support the infection control team in developing the Trust's infection control initiatives and conducting environmental audits.

Serve as an expert resource relevant to service specialties in response to incidents, complaints, and claims, reviewing trends and initiating practice reviews.

Collaborate with stakeholders to formulate and implement strategies and systems for risk identification and management.

Promote compliance with legislation and responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act, following policies and procedures regarding patients, staff, equipment, and the public.

Serve as an expert nursing advisor to Trust committees, including the Clinical Practice Committee, Health & Safety, and Clinical Risk Management, as required.

5. Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and Minimizing Healthcare-Associated Infections (HCAI)

Foster an environment where infection prevention and control are integral to care delivery by setting and monitoring environmental standards, ensuring compliance with cleaning audits and inspection specifications.

Ensure all staff understand their roles in patient safety concerning infection prevention and control and possess the knowledge and competencies to provide optimal care through appraisals, objective setting, and promoting best practices.

Analyze IPC and HCAI surveillance, audit, and RCA data to inform priorities, actions, and interventions aimed at reducing infections.

Establish a communication framework that promotes effective collaboration within clinical teams and across the Trust to optimize patient journeys and improve outcomes.

6. Resource Management

Collaborate with the senior matron/head of children's nursing on budgetary management across clinical areas of responsibility.

Actively manage resources, including human (staffing), material, and financial (budgetary) aspects.

Ensure high-quality service delivery within agreed budgets by optimizing available resources for value for money.

Support the Directorate team in developing and implementing the annual cost improvement program in accordance with Trust targets and timelines.

7. Policy Development and Influence

Contribute to professional policy-making by assisting the senior matron/head of children's nursing in developing a children's nursing strategy.

Be responsible for creating an effective performance monitoring system for targets set within the children's nursing strategy and provide quarterly progress reports to the senior matron.

Identify, implement, and evaluate care standards as part of a continuous quality improvement program, utilizing agreed benchmarks and toolkits.

Collaborate with the nursing directorate and senior matron to implement and ensure adherence to the nursing clinical audit program as outlined in the audit timetable, monitoring action plans.

Prioritize service provision, considering varying demands and available resources.

Work with the senior matron and head of children's nursing to provide ongoing professional development opportunities for all staff.

Agree on annual objectives and conduct staff appraisals with all direct reports, ensuring alignment with personal, professional, and organizational goals within the Knowledge and Skills Framework.
