Position: Sustainability Manager
Sector: Construction
Salary: £70,000/£75,000 (plus bonus and car allowance)
We are collaborating with a prominent regional contractor that specializes in providing customized construction solutions, emphasizing teamwork and client satisfaction. With a robust financial standing and a turnover approaching £100 million, they effectively manage projects ranging from £100,000 to £30 million.
The organization is in search of a qualified Sustainability Manager to enhance their team. This role entails the formulation and execution of sustainability initiatives across various projects and operations. A comprehensive understanding of sustainability concepts within the construction sector, a cooperative mindset, and the capability to foster organizational change are essential.
Key Responsibilities:
This pivotal role will support both head office and site teams in data collection and information management necessary for meeting external accreditations (e.g., BREEAM) and internal environmental and carbon reporting. Responsibilities include:
- Sustainability Strategy: Craft and implement extensive sustainability strategies that align with corporate objectives and industry best practices to meet Net Zero Carbon goals.
- Compliance and Reporting: Ensure adherence to pertinent sustainability standards and regulations, including BREEAM, LEED, and UK Building Regulations. Develop Carbon Reduction Plan targets, initiate actions, and maintain records. Prepare and submit necessary sustainability reports.
- Project Integration: Collaborate with Contracts Managers, procurement, and site teams to embed sustainability practices into project planning, design, procurement, and execution.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Work alongside internal and external stakeholders, including clients, suppliers, and regulatory bodies, to advocate for sustainability and ensure alignment with expectations.
- Education and Training: Design and deliver sustainability training programs for employees and subcontractors to raise awareness and promote sustainable practices (e.g., toolbox talks / CPD).
- Innovation and Best Practices: Stay informed about sustainability trends and innovations in the construction industry. Identify and apply best practices to improve sustainability outcomes. Keep updated on new technologies and maintain a repository of sustainable products and specifications.
- Resource Management: Oversee resources such as energy, water, and materials to minimize waste and environmental impact, capturing data within SustainIQ and analyzing performance metrics.
- Social Responsibility: Encourage social sustainability by supporting community engagement and social value initiatives as part of a broader team.
Key Skills:
The ideal candidate will be a collaborative team player with a natural curiosity, capable of taking initiative to manage various tasks that support sustainability. The candidate should be comfortable assuming individual responsibility for tasks within a supportive environment and possess the following qualifications:
- 3-5 years of experience in sustainability, preferably within the construction sector. Familiarity with sustainability standards and certifications (e.g., BREEAM, SKA, LEED) is highly advantageous.
- A degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline. Design experience, advanced degrees, or certifications in sustainability are beneficial.
- Proficient in using a variety of basic PC-based IT systems (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.). Experience with carbon modeling tools, such as One Click LCA, would be a plus.
- Strong proficiency in both written and spoken language, with a keen attention to detail.
