Legal Expert for Veterinary Professional Conduct

Job Purpose
The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) seeks a dedicated Solicitor to manage concerns raised against veterinary surgeons and nurses. This role involves overseeing investigations, managing disciplinary cases, and providing expert legal counsel to both the RCVS and the wider veterinary community.
Key Responsibilities
- Development of Best Practice: Contribute to refining complaints and disciplinary procedures through project management and collaboration with stakeholders.
- Complaints Management: Lead investigations referred to the Preliminary Investigation Committee, providing legal guidance and documentation. Collaborate with the Disciplinary Committee Clerk on case preparation for hearings.
- Disciplinary Case Preparation: Independently manage cases presented before the Disciplinary Committee, including instructing external legal counsel and veterinary experts.
- Regulatory Oversight: Review disclosures of convictions and cautions by veterinary professionals, reporting findings to the Registrar and Preliminary Investigation Committee.
- Health & Performance Protocols: Oversee cases managed under health and performance protocols, liaising with medical supervisors and examiners.
- Legal Representation: Handle High Court judicial reviews and Privy Council appeals on behalf of the RCVS, supporting the Head of Professional Conduct in specialized projects.
Other Responsibilities: Potential for line management responsibilities within the administrative team.
Essential Criteria
- Qualifications: Solicitor or Barrister registered with the appropriate professional body, or equivalent qualifications.
- Skills, Knowledge & Experience: Extensive experience in handling complaints, proven track record of managing teams and systems, in-depth knowledge of legal aspects of professional regulation, excellent interpersonal communication skills, and exceptional drafting and writing abilities.
