Job Purpose

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons seeks a highly skilled and experienced professional to manage concerns against veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses. This role involves investigating cases referred to the Preliminary Investigation Committee, managing cases under the Health and Performance Protocols, and preparing cases for the Disciplinary Committee.

Key Responsibilities

Development of Best Practice

  • Managing projects related to the development of complaints and disciplinary procedures.

Complaints

  • Investigating cases referred to the Preliminary Investigation Committee, attending meetings, and providing legal advice.
  • Liaising with the DC Clerk on case preparation and providing legal advice to the Disciplinary Committee.
  • Preparing cases for the Disciplinary Committee, including instructing external solicitors or barristers and veterinary experts.
  • Considering disclosures of convictions and cautions by veterinary surgeons and nurses, reporting annually.
  • Managing cases under the Health and Performance Protocols, liaising with medical supervisors and examiners.
  • Managing High Court judicial reviews and Privy Council appeals on behalf of the RCVS.

Other

  • Potential line management responsibilities for members of the administrative team.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications

  • Solicitor or Barrister registered with the appropriate professional body, or equivalent qualifications.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Extensive experience in dealing with complaints.
  • A track record of managing teams and systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of legal aspects of professional regulation.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and drafting skills.
