Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Policy Analyst to become a vital part of our Built Environment Committee team. This role involves conducting comprehensive research and analysis across various public policy domains, while also providing both written and verbal briefings and coordinating evidence sessions with diverse stakeholders.

This position offers a unique and fulfilling opportunity to influence and contribute to a wide array of topics within the Committee's scope. Recent investigations have focused on innovative construction methods, the effects of environmental regulations on urban development, and the revitalization of high streets in smaller towns and cities.

Flexible working arrangements allow for up to three days of remote work, contingent on business requirements, alongside a minimum of two days on-site. This role is ideal for individuals with a strong interest and background in public policy, who thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Keeping abreast of significant policy and political changes in housing, planning, transportation, and infrastructure.
  • Proposing and investigating topics for Committee inquiry and drafting scoping notes.
  • Identifying and reaching out to potential oral evidence witnesses, preparing relevant questions for Committee members.
  • Creating background briefings on critical issues.
  • Analyzing and summarizing evidence presented to the Committee.
  • Participating in committee meetings and providing oral briefings to the Chair and Committee members.
  • Collaborating with the clerk to draft committee reports and correspondence.
  • Engaging with a variety of stakeholders interested in the Committee's activities and maintaining a network of contacts.

Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications

  • A minimum of a 2:1 undergraduate degree or equivalent.

Relevant Experience

  • Strong knowledge and experience in housing, planning, transportation, and/or infrastructure, along with a solid understanding of the UK public policy landscape.
  • A demonstrated ability to quickly grasp new topics.

Communication Skills

  • Exceptional written communication skills, with the ability to distill complex information into clear, concise, and analytical reports.
  • Strong oral communication abilities, capable of representing the Committee to a wide range of stakeholders and building a sustainable network of contacts.

Political Acumen

  • A solid understanding of the political context surrounding the Committee's work and broader public policy discussions.
  • The capacity to produce impartial and balanced work, free from personal political biases.

Personal Attributes

  • Demonstrated flexibility and resilience in delivering high-quality work under tight deadlines, showing initiative when necessary.
