Renal Nutrition Specialist

Plymouth, Plymouth, United Kingdom University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust Full time

Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and proactive nutrition specialist with strong interpersonal and collaborative skills to become a vital member of our renal nutrition team.

Your role will involve close collaboration with the renal multidisciplinary team (MDT) to deliver tailored dietary support to patients experiencing kidney-related health issues. This may encompass care for individuals at various stages, including pre-dialysis, dialysis, and post-transplant, across inpatient, outpatient, and day case settings.

This position necessitates a high degree of independent practice, making it particularly suitable for an experienced renal nutrition specialist. However, we also welcome applications from dietitians with substantial clinical backgrounds and a genuine interest in renal nutrition.

The Renal Unit at University Hospitals Plymouth is committed to providing comprehensive renal replacement therapies and transplantation services to a wide geographical area. Our Nephrology Service operates as a tertiary care provider, offering round-the-clock support for adults facing acute kidney injuries and chronic kidney disease.

We pride ourselves on being a large, welcoming, and innovative department that values continuous professional development and evidence-based practices. We maintain strong partnerships with educational institutions, fostering a culture of learning and growth. Our location offers a vibrant urban environment with easy access to natural beauty.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the renal MDT and dietetic team to deliver comprehensive dietary care to patients under the renal unit's supervision.
  • Conduct independent assessments and provide complex nutritional counseling to patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals.
  • Develop and implement realistic, evidence-based nutritional care plans, considering various medical, social, and psychological factors.
  • Utilize effective communication strategies to support patients in making dietary changes, employing motivational interviewing techniques as necessary.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of nutritional care plans, adjusting them as needed based on evolving medical conditions and personal circumstances.
  • Provide expert nutritional advice to patients and healthcare teams, ensuring that care plans are informed by clinical evidence.
  • Facilitate educational sessions for patients and staff, enhancing understanding of renal nutrition.
  • Supervise and mentor junior staff and students, contributing to their professional development.
  • Maintain accurate and timely patient records in accordance with established standards.
  • Engage in audit and evaluation activities to assess the effectiveness of renal dietetic practices.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics or equivalent.
  • Professional registration with the relevant regulatory body.
  • Demonstrated experience in renal dietetics and a strong understanding of best practices in this field.
  • Proven ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.

We are committed to fostering a diverse workforce and encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds. We recognize the importance of work-life balance and are open to discussing flexible working arrangements.
