Job Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Principal Engineer to join our Street Lighting team at Kirklees Council. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for managing, maintaining, and upgrading our street lighting assets, as well as delivering a significant capital LED programme.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team to deliver the street lighting service, including managing budgets and resources.
  • Prepare and lead the preparation of street lighting and electrical designs.
  • Undertake the relevant duty holder's role under the Construction Regulations 2015, including Designer/Principal Designer.
  • Prepare estimates, technical reports, feasibility studies, design specifications, and contract documents, and carry out project management, including programming and cost monitoring.
  • Prepare and produce environmental impact awareness reports, economic assessments, and business cases.
  • Contribute to compliance with the Quality Management Systems, including site-specific audits.
  • Manage and deliver the LED capital investment programme and monitor and report on the associated Salix funding grant.
  • Work with Councillors, MPs, and other stakeholders to ensure a prompt and comprehensive response.
  • Engage with clients, external partners, the council's internal construction team, Northern Power Grid, and subcontractors to provide and ensure a high-quality service and performance.
  • Manage the day-to-day street lighting inventory, ensuring timely and accurate updates to reflect energy savings and reduction of the carbon footprint.
  • Manage and monitor the street lighting energy budget.
  • Be responsible for the wellbeing of yourself and others.

Requirements

  • A full and valid driving license, and a willingness to undertake and pass a Kirklees Council driving assessment, or ability to use public transport, whichever method is most appropriate and cost-effective.
  • A high level of communication skills, both written and verbal.
