We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Clinical Scientist in Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics to join our team at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. As a key member of our Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) service, you will play a crucial role in providing a comprehensive and high-quality service to our patients and healthcare professionals.
Key Responsibilities- Provide expert specialist theoretical and practical knowledge of all aspects of transplant immunology, H&I, and management.
- Perform all practical, administrative tasks, and educational matters relevant to the H&I service offered by the laboratory.
- Assist the Clinical Lead in provision of comprehensive H&I service to the Trust and other users of the service.
- Deputise for the Clinical Lead in providing oversight in all aspects of the H&I service.
- Assist the Clinical Lead in provision of strategic direction of the H&I Laboratory, working with the Derriford Combined Lab Clinical Director and Service Line Manager for Pathology.
- Act as a Quality Manager for the H&I Laboratory.
- Participate in the emergency Senior/Consultant Clinical Scientist on-call rota for the Southwest Kidney Transplant programme and National deceased HLA typing programme.
- Provide supervision and advice to other members participating on the technical support on-call rota.
- Highly developed practical skills, experience, and manual dexterity in order to carry out routine and on-call laboratory tests with speed and accuracy.
- Competence in all aspects of H&I laboratory service provision.
- Ability to take responsibility and/or deputise for the Clinical Lead in ensuring staffing availability for routine analysis and specialised clinical advice on a 24-hour basis.
- Ability to deputise for the Clinical Lead and provide advisory service about the appropriate use of H&I tests and the interpretation of test results.
- Ability to take an active role in the selection and introduction of analytical methods and services used under the control of the section.
- Ability to initiate service development and delivery at a specialty level.
- Ability to participate in research and development (R&D) on relevant scientific and clinical problems.
- Ability to supervise research projects within the laboratory.
- Ability to participate and support the Clinical Lead in securing funding from grant awarding bodies.
- Ability to participate in training and development as required for fellow members of staff, undergraduate medical students, and others.
The post holder will be required to work within the financial and other constraints decided upon by the Trust. They will be expected to comply with employment and personnel policies and procedures in the management of employees of the Trust. Travel as necessary between hospitals/clinics will be required, but a planned and cost-effective approach will be expected.
