Volunteer Support Counsellor

StratforduponAvon, Warwickshire, United Kingdom The Shakespeare Hospice Full time

Position Overview

The Shakespeare Hospice is currently seeking dedicated individuals for volunteer placements as Support Counsellors. Ideal candidates should either be qualified or in the process of obtaining their qualifications, with a minimum of 50 hours of relevant experience. A commitment of at least one year is essential.

This role involves providing support to clients who are either pre- or post-bereaved. While the work can be demanding, it is also immensely fulfilling, and you will receive comprehensive support throughout your journey.

In exchange for your time, we offer valuable training, a sense of community, a beautiful working environment, and monthly supervision contributions.

Key Responsibilities

As a volunteer Support Counsellor, your primary responsibility will be to assist our Adult Counselling service by providing emotional support to clients facing complex end-of-life and bereavement challenges. This role adheres to the standards set forth by NICE Guidance, 2004, and involves addressing a variety of mental health concerns, including but not limited to depression, anxiety, stress, and adjustment issues within a palliative care context.

About The Shakespeare Hospice

Located in Stratford upon Avon, The Shakespeare Hospice offers a wide array of services to patients and their families across South Warwickshire and neighboring regions. Our mission extends beyond end-of-life care; we strive to provide compassion and support throughout the entire journey of our patients, from diagnosis to treatment and beyond.

Our services include day hospice care, hospice at home, adult and children's counselling for pre- and post-bereavement, transitional care for young adults facing terminal illnesses, as well as spiritual, emotional, and complementary therapies. We pride ourselves on an inclusive approach that encompasses not only the patient but also their entire support network, including family and loved ones.

Qualifications and Requirements

Essential Skills

  • Ability to provide psychological support to adult patients, caregivers, and families aged 18 and over, as per the operational policy.
  • Experience in establishing short and medium-term counselling relationships informed by established counselling theories and evidence-based techniques.
  • Willingness to engage in team activities and contribute to the volunteer counselling team.

Additional Duties

  • Manage a client caseload of at least four clients, as coordinated with the Service Co-ordinator.
  • Regularly review and adjust counselling frequency and goals with clients.
  • Work towards a planned conclusion with clients, ensuring continuity of care.
  • Participate in client reviews at specified intervals and consult with the counselling coordinator as needed.
  • Maintain professional records in accordance with hospice policies and ensure confidentiality of client information.
  • Adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy.
  • Attend mandatory training sessions and comply with organizational policies.

Professional Considerations

New volunteer Support Counsellors will be required to complete an application form, provide two references, and participate in an interview process. A service agreement will be provided upon joining, and you will report to the Adult Counselling and Bereavement Support Service Co-ordinator.

A commitment of at least one year post-induction training is expected, along with a signed Declaration of Confidentiality. Indemnity Insurance will be provided to support your role.

Conclusion

This role offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of individuals facing challenging circumstances while being part of a supportive team.
