Job Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Principal Designer to join our team at SYSTRA UK & Ireland. As a key member of our Systems Safety Team, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 throughout the Pre-Construction Phase.

Main Responsibilities
  • Work closely with SYSTRA and Client Projects to ensure CDM requirements are met, with a focus on delivering positive health and safety outcomes.
  • Oversee and support the Design Team to ensure design work contributes to the delivery of safe and efficient projects.
  • Liaise with key stakeholders, including Clients, Designers, and Contractors, to ensure CDM requirements are met.
  • Regularly report to Clients on project development and issues related to CDM 2015 compliance.
  • Attend and provide input to Client Projects and SYSTRA forums to promote Design Risk Management best practices.
  • Implement and maintain Hazard Management assurance processes to ensure high standards of CDM compliance are achieved.
  • Monitor and inspect company projects from a CDM perspective to report on levels of compliance and identify lessons learned and opportunities for improvement.
  • Provide input to SYSTRA focus groups, including Technical Board and Safe by Design Group.
  • Promote effective Design Risk Management throughout the company and Client Projects.
  • Facilitate Hazard Identification, Hazard Review, Constructability Reviews, and other design-focused workshops.
  • Assist the company with business development and continual improvement through collaborative working with other disciplines to enhance SYSTRA's service delivery and processes.
  • Provide guidance and management on issues involving CDM and general construction activities, as well as other regulatory requirements relating to SYSTRA's portfolio of works.
Requirements
  • Highly knowledgeable and experienced in the successful application and management of CDM 2015, with a focus on Principal Designer duties in a multi-disciplinary railway major project environment.
  • Significant experience within the railway industry, working at a similar level (Principal Designer/Senior Designer/Lead Engineer level).
  • Chartered member of a relevant professional institution, such as IOSH, ICE, or APS.
  • A NEBOSH Diploma or similar, and/or Design Certification.
  • Strong levels of experience and knowledge of engineering design and construction principles and standards, with a focus on the rail industry.
  • Good knowledge of engineering design standards for the UK Rail Network and British and European Standards.
  • Highly knowledgeable in risk assessment and design risk management processes and techniques.
  • Effective communicator, able to chair and control multi-disciplinary meetings.
  • Able to manage and plan your own workload effectively.
  • Able to foster high levels of co-operation and co-ordination between project teams and individual members.
  • Able to carry out duties on both complex multi-disciplinary and simple projects, working alongside design teams.
  • Experience in auditing projects and processes.
  • Solid understanding of the General Principles of Prevention and their application and promotion throughout the design phase.
