You will assist the Ward Manager in maintaining ongoing accountability for the ward's operations.

Provide guidance and support to the nursing team within the unit.

In the absence of the Ward Manager, you will take on the responsibility for managing and supporting the unit.

Deliver high-quality, evidence-based care to individuals receiving acute inpatient services.

Ensure the highest level of safe and effective care is provided within the available resources.

Support the team in enhancing their practice, facilitating career progression, and promoting expertise through comprehensive supervision and access to training and development opportunities.

Strive for continuous service improvement in accordance with the clinical governance framework, trust objectives, and NHS performance standards.

Key Responsibilities

Utilize clinical expertise to offer specialized advice and support to colleagues, patients, and their families.

Act as a clinical authority and positive role model for all team members.

Provide professional leadership, guidance, and support to both nursing and non-nursing staff within the clinical environment, fostering collaborative relationships with other disciplines.

Lead the supervision and management of clinical nursing practices within your area of responsibility to ensure safe and effective holistic care based on evidence.

Collaborate with the Ward Manager to establish, implement, and monitor clinical standards that meet service needs.

Oversee the assessment, implementation, and evaluation of individualized care plans for service users.

Act as a key worker, providing advice and support to colleagues as needed.

Assume charge of the unit in the absence of the designated responsible person, including managing bed allocations.

Facilitate teaching and supervision for the team, including qualified staff, non-qualified staff, and learners.

Report any issues affecting care delivery or the efficient operation of the ward to the Team Manager or designated deputy.

Ensure compliance with Trust Policies and Procedures by all staff members.

Responsibilities of the Role

Assist the Ward Manager in the daily operations of the clinical area and in team development.

Ensure a clean, pleasant, and comfortable environment that meets usage standards at all times, taking necessary actions to uphold high standards, including adherence to Infection Control and PLACE requirements.

Support human resource management by preparing duty rosters, planning annual and study leave, and monitoring attendance in line with policy to ensure adequate staffing levels to meet service demands. Provide statistical data as required.

Contribute to service development by participating in forums, steering groups, and meetings as necessary.

Collaborate as a Key Worker within the multidisciplinary team, serving as a role model for best practices, liaising with associated professionals and agencies, and providing support and guidance to the clinical team as needed.

Ensure that service user-centered care plans are developed, implemented, evaluated, and documented, monitoring their relevance and currency.

Facilitate ward and unit activities.

Participate in the assessment of service users in crisis during the 24-hour period, coordinating with other services as required.

Maintain effective and therapeutic communication with service users, caregivers, visitors, and staff, utilizing evidence-based practices in daily clinical activities.

Implement and ensure compliance with the Mental Health Act 1983 and Mental Capacity Act as necessary. Represent the nursing team and provide reports for Managers' Hearings and Mental Health Act Tribunals.

Lead the formulation of discharge and transfer plans for patients in accordance with the Care Programme Approach, Community Care Act 1990, and discharge policies.

Ensure adherence to Trust policies and procedures at all times, assisting in the development and revision of policies as necessary.

Supervise and monitor the use of supplies and equipment, ensuring adequacy and appropriate usage. Assist in maintaining financial records as needed.

Participate in teaching programs for all staff, including students, while being aware of personal development and training needs. Maintain a conducive learning environment and assist in the induction of new staff. Engage in Performance Appraisal.

Participate in clinical and management supervision, conducting structured and regular meetings with identified nurses. Engage in Preceptorship programs, teaching and assessing nursing students, and mentoring unqualified staff, including Associate Practitioners.

Assume the role of shift coordinator and unit nurse, ensuring effective resource utilization, monitoring duty rosters to ensure adequate staffing, and redeploying staff as necessary within the unit.

Undertake additional link roles for specified areas as required, including Infection Control, Health and Safety, PALS liaison, and Student Placements.

Lead and support colleagues in managing violence and aggression, including de-escalation techniques and physical intervention (TASI) as necessary.

Participate in the recruitment and selection of new staff as required.

Conduct investigations in accordance with the Patient Safety Incident Reporting Framework (PSIRF) in the absence of the senior nurse and address complaints as appropriate.

Ensure staff are familiar with the Trust Fire Procedure and may be required to act as Fire Officer in the absence of a senior clinician.

Flexibility to work over a 24-hour period to meet the operational needs of the unit is essential.

Undertake any additional duties deemed appropriate to the role.

Communicate policies and procedures within the service and externally to ensure effective understanding and implementation.

Maintain effective relationships with Trust members and other statutory and voluntary organizations.
