We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated pharmacy operations manager to oversee the comprehensive medicines management service and the clinical pharmacy technician and assistant team across multiple healthcare facilities.
The successful candidate will be tasked with the development, leadership, and delivery of a superior clinical service across various hospital sites, collaborating closely with senior pharmacy leadership. This role will exemplify the principles of patient-centered pharmacy technician services.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct the establishment and enhancement of medicines management services for pharmacy technicians and assistants.
- Formulate and execute policies, procedures, and operational practices to ensure the effective and safe functioning of the pharmacy services.
- Collaborate with Care Group Pharmacists to align medicines management activities with the needs of clinical wards.
- Oversee the training and management of pharmacy technicians and assistants.
- Ensure quality assurance for the pharmacy services, including the development and tracking of quality metrics.
- Actively participate in pharmacy management groups, leading initiatives that enhance pharmacy technician practices across the organization.
- Identify opportunities for service development within clinical areas and work with senior pharmacists to implement improvements.
- Monitor and report on clinical pharmacy service activities, including training and development of staff.
- Facilitate effective communication regarding developments in the medicines management service across the organization.
- Contribute to the development and review of policies impacting the pharmacy department and ensure compliance.

Job Duties
- Deliver a specialized, patient-focused technical pharmacy service.
- Provide expert guidance to pharmacy and healthcare staff on pharmacy services, medication management, and expenditure.
- Uphold the highest standards of customer service when interacting with patients and staff.
- Assist with individual patient medication management issues within the scope of expertise.
- Advocate for pharmaceutical care for all patients.
- Conduct medicines management accreditations and perform related duties under supervision.
- Make informed decisions to resolve issues and refer complex queries as necessary.
- Support the transfer of medications between wards and assist in locating misplaced medications.
- Engage in cost-saving initiatives, including the reuse of patient-owned medications.
- Verify patient-owned drugs for inpatient use and at discharge.
- Perform accuracy checks on medications in designated units upon completion of the relevant training program.
- Ensure timely and efficient supply of medications to facilitate patient discharge.
- Provide counseling to patients and caregivers regarding their medications.
- Participate in dispensary operations, including managing a ward-based pharmacy as needed.
- Organize and prioritize team workload in accordance with standard operating procedures.
- Communicate with nursing staff regarding the completion and storage of discharge prescriptions.
- Oversee the proper storage of medications in clinical settings.
- Ensure the timely return of non-stock controlled drugs from clinical areas to the pharmacy.
- Conduct daily temperature checks and maintain accurate records.
- Monitor and report on drug cost savings associated with the pharmacy services.
- Develop and oversee policies for managing patient-owned drugs.
- Manage the overall handling of patient-owned drugs within the organization.
- Participate in drug expenditure reporting and data retrieval for clinical staff.
- Supervise the cross-site pharmacy technician and assistant services, including direct management of senior staff.
- Lead, mentor, and evaluate junior staff performance, ensuring recognition of excellence and addressing underperformance.
- Conduct regular performance reviews and establish clear objectives and development plans for team members.
- Ensure compliance with mandatory training and professional development requirements.
- Manage team attendance and productivity in accordance with organizational policies.
- Identify and address staffing needs in line with recruitment policies.
- Support talent management initiatives to attract and retain skilled personnel.
- Regularly assess team skills to optimize resource allocation and maintain updated job descriptions.
- Promote team well-being and foster a positive work environment, implementing a zero-tolerance policy for bullying and harassment.
- Lead research and audit initiatives within the pharmacy services and actively participate in departmental research groups.
- Engage in research and audits related to pharmacy services and disseminate findings at local and national levels.
- Continuously enhance personal expertise in medicines management services.
- Provide specialized support and guidance to pharmacy technicians in research and audit projects.
Qualifications
Essential
- Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council
- Completion of a General Pharmaceutical Council-approved competency qualification
- Management qualification or equivalent senior management experience
