About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Head Gardener to join our team at Mount Stewart, a world-renowned garden in the ownership of the National Trust. As a key member of our gardening team, you will be responsible for the overall management and care of the garden, leading a team of staff and volunteers to ensure the highest standards of horticulture and visitor experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage a team of gardening staff and volunteers to achieve the garden's objectives
  • Develop and implement strategies for the conservation and management of the garden's historic landscape and plant collection
  • Collaborate with the General Manager and other stakeholders to ensure the garden's vision and goals are achieved
  • Manage budgets and resources to ensure the effective delivery of garden operations
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including visitors, volunteers, and external partners
Requirements
  • Significant practical experience in horticulture, supported by relevant qualifications
  • Sound and extensive plant knowledge and plant husbandry skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of the conservation of historic landscapes and key management documents
  • Great leadership skills with experience of managing and supporting teams
  • Good communication skills, enabling positive relationships to be built and maintained externally and internally
  • Knowledge of all relevant Health & Safety and Compliance requirements
  • Ability to work to budgets and plan accordingly
