Manufacturing Operations Supervisor

Location: Newport

Salary: £35,000 per annum

The Manufacturing Operations Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and managing the workforce involved in the production and assembly of materials and finished products. This role ensures the timely delivery of high-quality products to our diverse customer base, including both retail and professional sectors. The Supervisor will advocate for the implementation of effective lean manufacturing methodologies to enhance site performance in key areas such as Safety, Quality, Cost, and Delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Meet established weekly production targets while adhering to budgetary constraints.
  2. Balance labor resources effectively, utilizing temporary staff during peak periods or employee absences.
  3. Drive departmental goals and performance indicators.
  4. Foster a safe and healthy workplace, actively participating in health and safety committees and initiatives.
  5. Continuously evaluate production processes for efficiency and improvement opportunities.
  6. Assist the Plant Manager during audits and customer evaluations as necessary.
  7. Lead a diverse team using contemporary management techniques.
  8. Support regular safety audits, risk assessments, and health and safety enhancement activities.
  9. Encourage a culture of continuous improvement within production areas.
  10. Contribute to the introduction of new products from a production standpoint, participating in relevant meetings and trials.
  11. Provide labor cost estimates as needed.
  12. Review and suggest capital investment projects aimed at enhancing production efficiency.
  13. Ensure compliance with all production and quality documentation requirements.
  14. Utilize the ERP system for effective stock management across production areas.
  15. Maintain open communication with site colleagues regarding development and sales needs.
  16. Ensure adherence to ISO9001 standards at all times.
  17. Lead and engage in continuous improvement initiatives, including 5S and Kaizen events, while identifying and implementing enhancements.
  18. Promote excellent housekeeping practices and maintain high standards of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
  19. Ensure proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment (PPE) throughout production processes.
  20. Exhibit flexibility in work approach to meet production demands, including shift work and overtime as required.
  21. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Plant Manager.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and MRP systems.
  • Minimum A-level education or equivalent, along with a formal production management qualification.
  • Demonstrated people management skills in a manufacturing context.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with continuous improvement tools and methodologies.
  • Experience in production management or supervisory roles within a similar industry.

Desirable:

  • Several years of experience in a production management role within a lean manufacturing environment.
  • Qualifications at ILM/NVQ level 3 or 6 in production management.
  • Professional certification in production management.
  • Extensive knowledge of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement practices in the packaging or FMCG sectors.

  • High attention to detail.
  • Strong planning and IT skills.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate team members.
  • Proficient in mathematics and communication.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.

Desirable Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of modern improvement tools and techniques.
  • Data management and PC proficiency.
  • Able to meet tight delivery schedules under pressure.
  • Experience in internal auditing within lean manufacturing environments.
  • Capability to identify and implement innovative solutions to production challenges.
