An exceptional opportunity exists to become a vital member of the Urology Nursing Team as a Prostate Cancer Pathway Nurse Consultant.
This role is crucial in our urology service, where we are dedicated to providing a seamless experience for our patients from initial diagnosis through to ongoing monitoring.
The successful candidate will take charge of the continuous enhancement and execution of a specialized nurse-led service for individuals referred with potential prostate cancer, managing referrals and coordinating necessary investigations as part of the prostate cancer care pathway.

Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be tasked with:
- Leading the establishment and execution of a dedicated nurse-led service for patients with suspected prostate cancer, in alignment with national guidelines.
- Setting up a nurse-led telehealth clinic to triage new patient referrals, ensuring comprehensive information is gathered and collaborating with primary care providers to complete necessary documentation.
- Ensuring all required investigations are finalized prior to the initial clinic visit.
- Conducting thorough clinical assessments of patients with suspected prostate cancer, including physical examinations and symptom evaluations.
- Referring patients with identified holistic needs to appropriate support services.
- Ordering necessary investigations such as MSU, PSA, mp MRI, bone scans, and CT scans as clinically indicated.
- Participating in outpatient clinics, collaborating with surgical teams to provide patients with essential information for informed decision-making.
- Counseling patients prior to invasive procedures, including prostate biopsies, and providing tailored written information.
- Serving as a primary contact for patients during the diagnostic process, facilitating referrals to specialized teams once a prostate cancer diagnosis is confirmed.
- Referring to other specialties as needed based on assessment outcomes.
- Creating informative materials for patients regarding the nurse-led service, including contact information for support.
- Ensuring appropriate treatments are prescribed and documented by medical staff following assessments, including hormone therapies and management of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Professional Duties
The candidate will be expected to:
- Adhere to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Professional Conduct and relevant regulations.
- Engage in training to gain confidence and competence in performing transperineal biopsies of the prostate, maintaining a portfolio of evidence for advanced practice.
- Complete and uphold necessary competencies for requesting radiological investigations in accordance with organizational policies.
- Work independently as a nurse specialist, recognizing personal limitations and seeking guidance when necessary.
- Act as a resource for primary care providers and other healthcare professionals regarding prostate cancer, offering expert nursing advice.
- Foster collaborative relationships and effective communication with multidisciplinary team members.
- Exemplify expertise in prostate cancer care and in performing transperineal biopsies.
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the prostate care pathway, adhering to established protocols.
- Document nursing care outcomes in patient records and relevant databases.
- Identify personal development needs to enhance advanced practice capabilities.

Quality Assurance and Monitoring

Research and Development
The role will also encompass:
- Initiating and participating in nursing research and audits.
- Promoting evidence-based best practices in patient care.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
- Registered Nurse Level 1.
- First Level Degree in nursing or equivalent education/experience.
- Willingness to undertake additional training for prostate biopsy procedures.
- Advanced communication skills training or willingness to pursue.
- Relevant Master's Degree or progress towards it.
- Ability to order investigations within the IRMER framework.
Desirable:
- Evidence of ongoing professional development.
- Nurse Prescriber qualification or progress towards it.
Knowledge and Skills
Essential:
- Extensive experience in caring for patients with prostate cancer.
- Previous experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist.
- Experience in developing and implementing nurse-led clinics.
