About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Edge Hill University as a Consultant in Haematology and Senior Lecturer. The successful candidate will have a strong background in haematology and a passion for teaching and research.

Main Responsibilities
  • Lead three general Haematology clinics a week, providing expert care and guidance to patients.
  • Review Haematology inpatient admissions and lab work, ensuring accurate diagnoses and effective treatment plans.
  • Participate in weekly sector multi-disciplinary team meetings, collaborating with colleagues to improve patient outcomes.
  • Option for remote working due to excellent IT setup, allowing for flexibility and work-life balance.
  • 1 in 3 local weekly on-call rota covering WWL referrals, providing 24/7 support to patients and colleagues.
  • Out of hours support to provide clinical and laboratory advice to colleagues, ensuring seamless care and communication.
About the Team
  • The team consists of 2 other consultants, 2 staff grades, 2 Haematology Clinical Nurse Specialists, and an FY1, providing a collaborative and supportive work environment.
  • Outpatient chemotherapy administered on our Cancer Care Centre, offering patients a range of treatment options.
  • Planned Investigation Unit for outpatient treatments, such as blood transfusions and iron infusions, ensuring efficient and effective care.

Person Specification
  • Qualifications:
    • MRCP or equivalent, demonstrating a strong foundation in medical knowledge and practice.
    • GMC with full licence to practice or eligible within six months of interview, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
    • FRCPath or equivalent, showcasing expertise in haematology and laboratory medicine.
    • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview OR equivalent, indicating completion of specialist training.
  • Experience:
    • Clinical experience and knowledge in: General Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Coagulation, Malignant Haematology, demonstrating a strong background in haematology and laboratory medicine.
    • Evidence of continuing personal and professional development and keeps up-to-date with medical advances, showcasing a commitment to lifelong learning.
    • Experience of recent and current research/ relevant publications, indicating a track record of academic and clinical contributions.
    • Experience of teaching/training, demonstrating a passion for education and mentorship.
    • Relevant experience in organisation and undertaking of audit, showcasing a commitment to quality improvement and patient safety.
