Oxford Nanopore Technologies, a leader in innovative sequencing solutions, is looking for a highly skilled individual to fill the role of Senior DevOps Engineer. This position is crucial for the management and deployment of essential infrastructure, which includes databases and web applications, in collaboration with our development teams.

As a key member of our IT team, you will work closely with the System Engineering Manager, contributing to a dynamic environment dedicated to providing comprehensive support for both production and development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Cloud and Infrastructure Management: Spearhead migration initiatives to cloud platforms. Continuously enhance both cloud and on-premises infrastructure to guarantee scalability and reliability. Collaborate with development teams to develop automated deployment and maintenance strategies.
  • System Administration and Automation: Oversee Linux systems (primarily Ubuntu) both on-premises and in cloud environments. Create and manage Ansible playbooks for infrastructure deployment and automation. Conduct routine system administration tasks, including patching, capacity management, and alert resolution. Address complex problem investigations and resolutions while managing change, incident, and problem management processes.
  • Security Implementation: Promote and apply best security practices within system engineering and development workflows. Recommend and implement enhancements to code or tools with a focus on security.
  • Containerization and Orchestration: Provide support and troubleshooting for Docker containers and Docker Swarm. Utilize container orchestration technologies, such as Kubernetes, for scalable deployments.
  • Monitoring and Maintenance: Establish and maintain monitoring and alerting systems using Grafana. Develop a knowledge base with documentation for common issues and solutions.
  • Change, Incident, and Problem Management: Investigate and resolve intricate problems. Represent proposed changes in change advisory board meetings. Collaborate with stakeholders to determine appropriate actions. Manage escalated user tickets.

What We're Looking For:

  • Essential Skills and Experience: Experience with cloud technologies, particularly AWS. Proficient in Linux systems administration (primarily Ubuntu). Familiarity with Terraform for managing complex infrastructure as code. Expertise in Ansible for automation and orchestration. Strong scripting skills in Python and Bash. Knowledge of containerization and orchestration technologies (Docker and Kubernetes). Experience with open-source monitoring tools (e.g., Grafana). Comfortable in both agile and ITIL environments. Excellent communication and organizational skills for effective coordination with stakeholders, users, and internal teams.
  • Preferred Skills and Experience: Knowledge of VMware vSphere and vCenter. Familiarity with DevOps tools and application administration (GitLab, Jira, Confluence, Artifactory, Vault, Rundeck). Experience supporting IT in diverse environments such as manufacturing, logistics, software development, and quality assurance.
