London, Greater London, United Kingdom Portsmouth Diocese Full time

Position Overview

The strategic direction for the diocese is outlined in our Jesus Centered strategy, which defines the key priorities for our community. Through these commitments, we aim for the diocese to expand in depth, influence, and numbers. All initiatives to fulfill these commitments are guided by our diocesan values of being courageous, collaborative, generous, resourceful, and pioneering. These values shape our collective and individual approaches to our work.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Provide effective leadership to the DSAP, including setting the agenda in collaboration with the DSA or diocesan bishop, finalizing minutes, chairing meetings, and overseeing follow-up actions.
  2. Ensure the DSAP fulfills its role and responsibilities in accordance with the established terms of reference.
  3. Collaborate with the DSA and senior staff to maintain a strategic overview of safeguarding practices across the diocese, adhering to House of Bishops' policy and practice guidance, along with appropriate quality assurance and risk management processes.
  4. Consider the needs of victims/survivors and those impacted by abuse, providing relevant advice.
  5. Work with the DSA and senior leadership to ensure the DSAP is well-resourced, with sufficient capacity and a diverse skill set among its members. Participate in recruitment and succession planning.
  6. Act as an informal point of contact for DSAs, diocesan bishop, or group members outside formal supervisory and management structures.
  7. Advise the diocesan bishop or senior leadership team on specific concerns or issues, and where appropriate, report any concerns as part of whistleblowing protocols.
  8. Engage in national and regional network meetings for chairs as required.

The Ideal Candidate

1. Recent, direct, and extensive professional safeguarding experience at a senior level within relevant statutory, voluntary, or judicial agencies (e.g., local authority children and adult services, police, national children's charity);

2. Experience in case reviews, risk management, and leading strategic partnerships;

3. A confident and empowering leadership style with the ability to strategically plan, manage meetings effectively, and influence others to enhance safeguarding practices;

4. Up-to-date knowledge of multi-agency safeguarding practices, legislation, and current developments;

5. An ability to advocate for and represent the DSAP at all levels, both internally and externally.
