About the Role:
The General Counsel is a critical strategic position for an experienced practicing lawyer who will advise the University on all matters with significant legal implications, risk, compliance, and policy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and advise on all legal matters arising from the University's activities and its group, including governance, commercial, contracting, research, employment, and student matters.
- Support the University Council, University Secretary, and senior executive on significant issues and business from a legal perspective.
- Manage the in-house Legal Services Team, inspiring high performance to ensure effective and efficient legal support across a wide range of law in a complex organization.
- Supervise members of the Legal Services Team and ensure compliance with Solicitors Regulation Authority and Bar Council requirements.
- Procure and manage external legal services when required, ensuring quality and value.
- Manage the legal budget and resources within the role's responsibility.
Requirements:
- Outstanding technical legal skills and experience in commercial, corporate, and intellectual property law, with a good understanding of data protection law.
- Excellent written and oral communication and relationship building skills to listen and understand university stakeholders' needs and communicate complex legal matters to lay audiences.
- Broad expertise across regulatory matters impacting a University, such as student complaints and discipline, charitable donations, and charity law.
