About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to lead our Sustainable Transport and Mobility team at Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council. As the Head of Service, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of transportation in Stockport, driving innovation, and delivering exceptional public services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and oversee critical areas of transportation, including network management, scheme feasibility, traffic management, and transportation strategy and policy.
  • Lead on delivering key infrastructure projects that enhance the borough's connectivity and sustainability, with a £12m annual budget and supporting delivery of a £70m capital programme.
  • Advise on major policy decisions, support the council's democratic processes, and represent Stockport on key regional boards.
  • Build and develop a strong, collaborative workforce, with five direct reports and a team of approximately 60 full-time employees.
  • Drive significant change and leave a lasting impact on the future of transportation in Stockport.
Requirements
  • A professional qualification in engineering, transport planning, or a related field, or equivalent experience from the public or private sectors.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders.
  • A strategic mindset, combined with hands-on experience in transport planning, project feasibility, and network management.
  • The ability to think creatively, challenge the status quo, and lead the shift towards a more sustainable and people-centred approach to transportation.
